Norfolk Arms (Glossop)
Advantages: Clean, Transport, Modern, Friendly
Disadvantages: No propper beer!
Where to start? This is a large pub in the centre of Glossop, Derbyshire and is named after the Duke of Norfolk (as are several other things in the town.) a major landowner in the area throughout recent history.
The building gives the impression of a traditional pub from the outside, but when you step inside it's very modern. Not a bad thing at all, the modern interior is very clean, and well lit. Sadly the range of drinks on offer is also modern, with no traditional cask ales on offer which, for me, means this place can only get 4 stars maximum. Also no premium Gin means my wife's G&T wasn't up to standard.
There are several big screen TVs showing football games and also the output of the video jukebox. A flick through the jukebox shows that there is something for everyone, unlike the bar, pop music, rock and roll, metal, hip hop, and some music for the over 50s! Still reckon I could empty the place of at least half of the punters if I played a load of Nine Inch Nails that was on offer... I stuck to one track!
I haven't eaten in the bar, but a look over the menu shows a good choice, and at very reasonable prices. Likewise the accommodation is reasonable priced on the poster outside, but as I live half a mile away I'm unlikely to try it.
Overall, the staff were friendly, and the ambience very relaxed. Back to the cleanliness and it's hats off to the staff, they are obviously not afraid of hard work.
Finally, leave via the side door and your taxi awaits as Glossop's little taxi rank is right outside. Turn left and you have the little bus station, just past that is the train station... so getting home is no problem from this bar.
Summary: Despite the lack of ale I will return, which is unusual for me!
