Recently returned to Oscar's after a year or two and sadly I can no longer say one good thing about it! I may as well just list the bad points:
- Ignored when we came in (waitress clocked us and ignored us);
- Had to wait 20mins to be seated, other people were prioritised over us;
- Food selection is very poor (if you don't want a burger);
- Staff are NOT friendly;
- Food quality is poor;
- Music is DEAFENING! (we were shouting);
- When we asked for the music to be turned down we were ignored (but told they would do it - yeah, right);
- Food is expensive;
- When we complained our comments were ignored (we had to shout them to be heard!) and met with abuse;
- Both myself and my partner suffered from food poisoning shortly afterwards;
I would never return here. There are so many lovely restaurants in York, don't waste your time with this one!
I was a student at York university and during my first year I was friends with quite a few students in the year above who always raved about Oscars and their burgers. However I never got to go and was never 100% sure where it was. It wasn't until my third year that I went, on a work do and I've loved it every since!
Oscars is officially called a Wine bar, however it's not your stereotypical snobby wine bar. I'd call it more an upmarket pub to be honest.
It is located on Little Stonegate, which is a side street just off Stonegate which leads into The Shambles. It being tucked away means that only those in the know will find it (or those tourists just wondering and getting lost!).
Oscars gets very busy but I'm unsure weather you can book or not. It has some seating outside with the big gas heater things but even then it can get cold. The downstairs is quite small and often gets crowded especially if lots of people are ordering food and drinks at the bar there. The upstairs, I've not eaten upstairs so I can't really comment but it seems more spacious but I think most people tend to eat downstairs or outside.
When I first visited Oscars it was just for drinks and being a student I was quite surprised how expensive they were. Now I'm not a student I realise that the prices weren't too bad! They do run happy hours daily and all night on a Sunday and Monday which makes the drinks very good value. Although you may have to ask what the offers are as sometimes they aren't all advertised.
I've never been to Oscars on a lunch time, only on an evening. The menu does both snacks and main meals but the focus is mainly burgers and what good burgers they are!!! I've always had the vegetarian spicy bean burger and the plate is bulging but being a true yorkshire lass I finish it all - but cannot move afterwards. The desserts look lovely but I've never had the space to try one.
All in all I think that Oscars is great for all ages and although it may be a bit pricey you do get what you pay for - great quality food that is lovely and filling.
To be found in Little Stonegate, just off main Stonegate, Oscars has the immediate advantage of being in a really nice place. It's basically on the city-centre, yet it's certainly not a towny pub. This place has got a real atmosphere- it's clearly an old building ideal for the ambience that Oscars is trying to give. Lots of wood - beamed ceilings etc. It's main feature is a great range of Wines to suit basically any budget, although they also have a standard range of beers. The prices are a little dearer than elsewhere, but I still go purely on account of it being a nice place to spend an evening. There are no crass gimmicks, no loud obnoxious kareoke sessions, no panoramic TV bolstered to the wall - no yobs either, which is always nice. Food is served upstairs - perhaps they try a bit too hard to be chique and trendy - but I've heard it's very good quality, if a little expensive. So although Oscar's is probably a little too dear to go very frequently, and some may appreciate a more lively pub, I personally think it's one of the nicest places to have an evening out in York - so take a look!
