I was visiting friends at the end of last year and we went to lots of pubs, restaurants and bars while we were staying with them and 'The Pear Tree Inn' was one such place. Our main reason for visiting here was that they were going to having a band playing in the evening. This prompted us to get there nice and early so we could ensure that we could get some seats and have something to eat before the band came and the place got too busy! First impressions upon arriving was that there was ample parking and the building did not look to bad from the outside. There was some outside seating which would have been nicer during the summer months but this looked like it could do with a good sand and a re-paint as well as having some of the tables cleared! When you go inside there is the pub over to one side and then you can access the bar and the inn by walking through. As we were going to the pub part first this was quite convenient for us. I must say that the decor was not very nice in this pub at all and it really looked like it needed some major refurbishing with everything from the chairs to the floors needing replacing and the whole place had a tired, old look to it that was quite disappointing to be honest. I was starting to wonder what we were doing here and then my friend was telling me about how good the band were that we were going to see later so I let this thought stay fresh in my mind while waiting for some service! It seemed to be around ten minutes before we were even noticed and then it was a few more minutes before we were seated at a table, they weren't exactly busy so this isn't acceptable really. The table we were seated at was a little but grubby and could have done with a wipe over. Once we were finally seated it was about another ten or fifteen minutes before we were able to get the drinks we ordered and a similar amount of time for the waitress to come back to take our order. The service was very slow at the start of our visit and this continued throughout despite myself and my friend making some very loud noises and complaints to try and attract some attention. It does take the mick to wait as long as we did, particularly when quiet as you think they'd want the business! Now I must say that had we not have been waiting to see the band a little bit later we would definitely have upped and left midway between our order being placed and the food arriving. Although once the food arrived they did redeem themselves a little. Maybe it was because we were totally ravenous at this point, I'm not sure, but the food we all had was lovely. It was traditional pub fayre and I ended up having sausages & mash which was just delicious, the gravy tasted homemade and the sausages tasted like they were good quality. I must say that the chef definitely helped to redeem things for us and we would happily eat the food again, not sure about enduring the service though! The food is reasonably priced and if you can overlook the pretty poor service you'll find yourself treated to something delightful. However, the poor decor and the bad service definitely make me not want to go back to this pub again. I can get a lovely sausage and mash in lots of other pubs in this area as I learnt in the time I spent with friends. I'd recommend the food here but that's about it, the decor is horrible, the staff on the waiting side aren't much better and it's not even like they could have said they were overworked as there were about three other people eating in the whole pub area.
