As a student i have been in loads of Wetherspoons before and this is by far the worst i have ever been in. My girlfriend and i decided to go for something to eat on a sunday afternoon. There was quite a few locals in but it is a large place and there was no atmosphere what so ever. When i went to order the food and drinks, the staff were very abrupt with me and there were a couple of drinks on tap that i wanted, which weren't working.
I ordered the sunday roast and my girlfriend had a medium rare steak. When it came, my vegetables looked like they had been reheated about 10 times and weren't the colour they should have been and the meat was thin and overcooked. The 'medium rare' steak was dry and really overcooked, most of it was gristly so out of the 10oz, only 5oz was edible. On a plus note the jacket potato was ok and our 2 cokes were fine.
All in all, if you want a cheap, quiet drink then it is ok. I expected alot more and we were both very disappointed with the Penny Black and will avoid going there next time we are in Bicester.
This is probably one of the worst Wetherspoons pubs that I have ever been to for food! They are completely unhelpful to groups, for example, I was with 5 friends but there were no tables large enough for us to eat together. We asked one of the staff if we could put two tables together, they said no, and just walked off leaving us to try and sort out how to split onto two tables. In the end, we gave up and just left. Also, the staff are miserable and they often get the orders wrong, and very late. On one evening one of my friends had to wait until the rest of us had finished her meal before she had hers brought to the table! We had also ordered hot puddings, which arrived stone cold, as though they had just come out of the fridge! The pub does have positive points. Like all Wetherspoons pubs the drinks are cheap (Smirnoff ice £1.50, and A pint of Carling £1.25) and the meals are pretty reasonable considering their size (Lamb Burger and chips around £5). However, while the Penny Black is probably one of the nicest pubs in Bicester (i.e. it doesn’t have a reputation for fights etc) it isn’t as good as other pubs in the chain.
