Advantages: Great atmosphere

Disadvantages: Very Busy

If your not from round Barnsley way you will not realise just how great Barnsley’s pub scene is.

I think in a recent poll in a popular magazine Barnsley came in either 2nd or 3rd place in the country for towns with the most pubs within 1 square mile of the town centre.

Over the last few years the number of pubs seems to be increasing very quickly seems the only business in Barnsley that can make a profit are pubs.

I will try and tell you about some of the pubs I drink in of course I will not be talking about every pub in Barnsley town centre as they are just too many.

I tend to like to start of in Butterfields which is a new addition to the Barnsley scene, it is one of these new café style bars with nice sofas in the windows for you to sit on while you enjoy your first drink of the evening. They serve light bites during the day but not on a evening. They also have sky sports to show all the top football matches live. This bar is not cheap for drinks but is still a good place to meet as taxis can pull up outside. The place is very tastefully decked out. The only downfall of this place is it can get very busy early on and you can find it hard to get served or find the friends you are trying to meet.

From here I tend to move across the road to Yates a walk of at least 50 yards this is maybe the furthest I have to walk all night between drinking holes. Well this pub is more than likely the same as the one in your local town as the all tend to be decorated the same. Again this is a very popular pub were a lot of people choose to meet. They have a DJ on Fridays and Saturdays which tends to get the atmosphere going nicely. Again this pub has seating in the window so you can have a look around while enjoying a drink.

From here I move on up the hill to another quite new bar called Ice bar this used to be an old toy store that due to poor profits had
to close. So has now been reopened as a pub much better use for the building I think. This pub has a wide selection of bottled beers of course all Ice cold quiet a large bar with plenty of staff serving. Prices are average special offers are available which change from week to week.

From this bar I move on to the orchard this one has been open since 1999 so not really new any more.
This bar is long and thin so again it quickly becomes difficult to move around. Bar staff are nice but not really enough of them so the bar sometimes seems like a rugby scrum as people try to get served. Drinks seem to be fairly cheap in here as a round of 4 drinks only costs around £7 which is not bad as they don’t have specials on a weekend. This bar puts on live music from time to time so it can be sometimes worth hanging around for more than one drink when they have a event on. For more information on this bar call gabe on 01226 732372.

Next in line is the ticket office and now we are on wellington street the heart of Barnsley’s pub scene with less than 2 yards between each pub. The ticket office looks like a old style shop from the outside and is decked out to look like its from the turn of the century. They have a DJ playing so the atmosphere is good and you will find a lot of people in here before going to the theatre next door or on to a club. No were to really sit in here but wide open spaces to stand in but still becomes very busy.

Next door is the theatre which is free to enter before 11so I tend to try and get in before then. This place has live bands every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. But they don’t start till later on so if you go in early you have to wait around a while. But later they start to charge an entrance fee. Normally quite empty early on but once the bands start gets very busy.

Hope you have found my look at the Barnsley pub scene
interesting below is a list of other pubs which are also worth a visit.

Panama Joe’s Up past Post Office
Treadles Wine Bar Grahams Orchard
Corner Pin Wellington Street
Soviet Bar Wellington street
Bar 1 Wellington Street
Sports Bar Wellington Street
