Advantages: lots of pubs, plenty of student discounts, safe
Disadvantages: clubs not mainstream, opening hours
Where do i start? Could it be the traditional "Mickelgate run" or go for the more up-beat "coney street stroll"?
I suppose, being a student i should start with the more traditional Mickelgate run.
Originally this started at Brewbakers (busy from about 8pm till 10pm then completely dead from then on!) and then heads off towards the centre of York. Such delights along the way include Harrys Bar (cheap tickets to get into the local nightclubs can be obtained here from the DJ), The Nags Head (possibly a gay pub, i`m not 100% sure. Anyway a quick pint wont hurt you!!) Then you come to one of Yorks finest pubs.....Edwards. This pub was the first in York to be awarded a late license and once you`ve been you`ll see why. A very large and busy pub with its own dance-floor. Plenty of drinks offers are promoted each night, one of them is bound to appeal to you!
Now we can go one of two ways, left towards Merlins and McMillans or right and over Lendal Bridge. My suggestion would be to go right and stop off at Old Orleans for a few cocktails. A personal favourite of mine is the flatliner!
From here, follow the road to the right and you will end up at the Gallery ( a very good nightclub with 3 floors playing music for all)
OK, back to the start and route 2:
Starting place is the Varsity. This is a very good student pub, being a student you can obtain a keyfob giving you extra offers on drinks.
Next pub is lendal cellars. A little bit of an obscure pub, being underground but a very cosy atmosphere and live music played. The next two pubs are very recent additions (and good ones at that!) to york. Bar 38 is a very popular pub, bound to be busy on any night of the week. Not quite so popular with the students because it`s prices are steep to say the least! Next door to Bar 38 is Pitcher and Piano, another very classy bar.
Carrying on down Coney Street you will emerge conveniently on Mickleg
ate close to the Gallery!
