The Stag & Pheasant @ Pontarsais near Carmarthen on the A485 has always been a pub known for its food or at least it was when I lived in the area. I was down at my parent’s last bank holiday Monday in Llandysul and was late leaving. My partner Jackie was with me so we thought we would stop for a meal on the way home and the Stag & Pheasant sounded like a good idea. We pulled into the car park, which was quite full, which is a good sign I guess. At the bar was a family trying to decide what to order for food and arguing a rather lot. I ordered drinks and asked for the menu, which I was given but was asked would I mind waiting as the barman was dealing with the other family – fine. We hung about at the bar until the other family was dealt with and then the barman came over and let the bombshell loose that they had run out of chips, disaster!! They still had jacket potatoes and sautéed potatoes so we decided to stay. I once again tried to order but was told to sit down for now and he would come over and take our order. I was now starting to get a bit aggravated especially when the barman walked passed a couple of times. In the end I went back up to the bar and ordered a steak for myself with sautéed potatoes and a pie with jacket potato for Jackie. The barman then became more and more like Basil Fawlty in trying to put people off dining just because they had no chips. It got silly when a couple came in looked at the menu and then left only to return some half an hour later with another couple. They asked for a table for four to be told that they were fully booked; this was farcical as half the tables were empty. The visitors complained as they had taken the car back to where they were staying and walked two miles back to the bar. The barman still would not have it and the visitors left. I started keeping an eye on the barman now as he was getting more and more aggravated especially when a local family came in for food and gave
him a lot of verbal regards the fact that there were no chips. In the end he went out and jumped in the car leaving the bar unattended. The food then arrived and surprise surprise I had a jacket potato and Jackie had chips, so we swapped potatoes and I got stuck in quickly before the barman returned. He eventually returned empty handed to more verbal abuse from the locals and we decided to leave. On the whole the food was OK the peas a bit hard but my steak was good even though it said that it should be in a pepper sauce there was no sauce visible just pepper on the steak. Reasonably priced but well worth it for entertainment value Jackie and I could do nothing but laugh once we left the pub.
