Yates's ruffled a few feathers a couple of years back when they decided to open a bar on Allerton Road, Mossley Hill. You see, although it is a heavily populated area for students there's also a very much middle-class middle-aged plus population here who did not want a noisy bar or puking teenagers. However, more people were in favour of the bar or else is would never have opened. To be honest, it was just what the area needed.


I'm not a fan of Yates's in the evening, especially at the weekend. It is quite young & lively. There are DJs, karaoke nights, and quite a substantial group of underage drinkers. I'll be 24 in August and yet I feel quite old when I'm amongst their standard weekend crowd. Dressed to kill in skimpy outfits, you wouldn't think this was a relatively small bar in a sleepy suburb.



DÉCOR

One thing this bar has got going for it is that is looks very nice, especially during the afternoon. Drinks and meals are served at nice wooden tables and they even have a lovely leather sofa if you're lucky enough to get there before anyone else takes it. It's clean, not too loud and not cramped unlike some of the city centre bars.



TOILETS

There are 3 toilets in Yates's- men's, ladies' and disabled. I can only speak for the ladies (not planning on a sex change!) but they're clean and spacious, with soap dispensers and working hand driers.



SERVICE

The bar is also wooden and it takes up the far right corner (as you enter the bar). It is quite long as usually there are a few members of staff hanging around ready to serve you. If it's quiet you'll be positively spoiled by their attention. The bar man picked up on my cheery demeanour on Thursday and asked me if I was drunk! (Not yet, love) Later in the evening or at the weekend you may have to queue for a few minutes to get served but I've never had to wait
too long.



DRINKS

Yates's have a great selection of drinks and frequent offers. On the day we went you got a whole bottle of wine for the price of 2 large glasses (£5.40) - making it a saving of £2.60. You really can't complain for getting a bottle of Chardonnay (Santa Helena) in a bar for a little more than you'd pay in an off license. They stock red, white and fizzy wines so there's usually something to suit people of all tastes. The only thing they're missing is my favourite White Zinfandel but the cheap wine made me forget all about that!


They also have selected bottles at special prices, for example from 2pm until 5pm daily a pint of Carling is just £1.40. Between 2pm and 8pm daily you can get Smirnoff Ice or Archers Aqua for £1.85 and a pint of Strongbow for £1.65.


Yates's also have a doubles bar - all day every day a double Smirnoff, Bells or Gordons is just £2.25 or you can get a double Jack Daniels or Southern Comfort for £2.45.


Not only can you get all the standard bottles or pints, Yates's also offer bargain cocktails for just £2.00 - sex - Y (tequila, grenadine & orange juice) or Boomerang (Australian White Wine, Lemonade and Lime). I haven't tried these yet but I really fancy the Boomerang.


Other cocktails are available for £3.25 a glass, including Sex on the Beach, Long Island Ice Tea and Mai Tai. I love Sex on the Beach - the drink!


Yates's have also joined the bandwagon and started to offer shooters, which previously I used to guzzle in Baa Bar. It costs £2 a shooter, including Aftershock, Sidekick, Olmeca Tequila and Luxardo Sambuca.



FOOD

Yates's also offer a decent range of food. It is reasonably priced, the service is quite fast and the food is delicious.

The menu includes:

SNACKS - jacket potatoes, salads, wraps and sandwiches. Prices start at £1.00 for soup,
baguettes are about £2.95, and potatoes start at £2.50. Jo had the caesar salad with chicken. The chicken was beautifully white & succulent looking.

GRILLS - perfect for blokes as its mainly steaks! A grilled 8 oz rump steak (served with chips, onion rings and peas) is only £5.95.

NIBBLES - this is the section that made me drool. Yates's serve the most delicious spiral fries from £1.50, onion rings, garlic bread, chips, mashed potato, salads and "Eastern extras" (Naan bread, vegetable samosas, onion bhajis and poppadoms). They also have a selection of food to share, including an Eastern combo and Oriental combo, both priced £6.95.

Just give me the fries & garlic bread and I'm a very happy girl! You get 4 slices of baguette style garlic bread, as well as 2 lemon wipes to clean your garlicy hands after eating.

MAIN COURSES

* Old favourites - includes the all day breakfast, sausage and mash, steak & kidney pie and fish & chips starting at £3.45.

* Burgers and roasts - its self-explanatory really but they offer beef burgers, lamb burgers and beanburgers as well as roast chicken or roast beef. Prices for these range from £3.65 for a beef burger (served with colesalw and chips) to £5.95 for the roast beef meal.

* From the grill - steak again, priced £5.95-£6.95.

* Italian job - Pasta served with Bolognaise sauce, Carbonara, or Neapolitan (tomato, herb & garlic sauce), as well as lasagne or vegetable or ricotta pasta bake. £4.25- £4.75

* A taste of the East - includes chicken tandoori masala, chicken balti jalfrezi, beef madras and vegetable balti masala, all priced at £5.00. These meals are all served with saffron rice, mango chutney and poppadoms.

SPECIAL OFFER - you can get a free pudding with your Sunday roast

PUDDINGS - That got your attention didn't it? This department is actually quite disappointing, as it doesn't include my favourite chocol
ate fudge cake. It does however include apple & raspberry crumble, sticky toffee pudding (which would be my choice), American style cookies with banana ice cream, chocolate and cherry pudding, and waffles with toffee ice cream. Puddings are £2.75 or £4.95 (for the puddings meant for sharing). As extras you can also get bowls of sweets to share including Maltesers and Jelly Babies.


Overall I'd highly recommend Yates's for an afternoon drink. Lunch for two plus 2 bottles of Chardonnay came to just under £20. Food is served until 8pm so it's ideal for a drink and meal after work. In fact, I'm going to drag my boyfriend there sometime to treat him. If you're a bit younger than me then Yates's is a fun, lively place to go at night, it's just not my scene.
