Red Lion Inn (Wooler)
Advantages: Great food, staff helpful and friendly
Disadvantages: Food very slow to be served
On our little mini break to Northumberland over the Easter break, we stopped one evening for dinner in the little town of Wooler, which has been referred to as the 'Gateway to the Cheviots' given its location by the Cheviot Hills, at the edge of the beautiful Northumberland National Park. This pretty little market town offers plenty of restaurants, pubs and even camping and caravan sites, as well as a lovely Common to go for a walk through and enjoy the beautiful quiet scenery.
There were several places that evening for us to chose from, but since we were quite hungry, we didn't want to wait for those pubs/restaurants that only started serving food from 6.30 and instead decided on the Red Lion Hotel/Pub, as it started serving evening meals from 6p.m. This pub also had its own 'light bites' menu, and since we were only looking for basic pub food rather than a fancy dinner, we were happy with the somewhat limited menu.
The Red Lion Inn is a white washed stone building in the centre of the town and there is plenty of on street car parking outside. We visited the pub on a lovely warm Spring evening and the door of the bar was left open for diners/drinkers could enjoy the warm sunshine. Alongside the light bites, this pub also serves fancier meals, and there is an extended seating area upstairs from the bar area.
When we arrived, the downstairs part of the bar was already quite busy, though mostly with those just enjoying a drink. We were given the bar menu, as well as the dinner menu, but it was the former that we were interested in. THe meals on this menu were basic but were all under £8, whereas the fancier dinner meals were priced up to £15.
After consulting the menu, I decided on the 'classic lasagne with garlic ciabatta' priced at £7.95, whereas my husband picked the beef burger which came with red onion jam, smoked cheese and chunky chips and cost £7.95 as well. As I said the light bites menu is limited but there are other choices such as fish and chips, chicken ceasar salad, white bait etc. A waitress came over not long after and took both our drinks order and our dinner choice.
The drinks order came quickly, however our food took at least half an hour to arrive, if not longer. By this stage we were really very very hungry, and the pub was filling up quickly with hungry diners. Eventually after a long wait, our food arrived. My lasagne was served in a separate round dish, alongsidde several slices of delicious garlic ciabatta, as chunky chips, The waitress was helpful and brought us some red sauce in a little dish for our chips. Both my meal and my husband's meal was worth the wait however as we both thoroughly enjoyed it. Staff were very friendly and helpful, and ensured that everything was okay with our meal. We never felt rushed with our meal, even though the pub was getting very busy, although when we asked for the bill, we were given it promptly.
All in all, it we are ever to be through Wooler again, I would certainly stop at this pub. The interior is modern and does resemble a restaurant rather than an old country style pub. Staff were very very friendly and pleasant, and the food was delicious and well priced. The only downside was the length of time that it took to be served our meal, especially when we weren't ordering anything fancy or anything that should warrant that length of time to cook, but nonetheless it was worth the wait, and we were very glad that we had chosen to eat in this pub in this pretty town.
Summary: Great pub grub in Wooler
