The first I heard about Slug and Lettuce was a couple of years back in uni. Well, I'd seen it, but for some reason never went in. So when my friends suggested we go out for a meal there, I assumed it would just be normal pub food.
Slug and Lettuces are set up slightly differently around the country, though some do have much more of a restaurant feel to them, depending on the location. They are often situated with restaurants rather than pubs.
The atmosphere inside is always very welcoming, and I've found the staff to be very attentive. As in a typical restaurant, you get full waiter service. Also, there is no service charge included.
The menu is quite varied, so even if you're fussy you should find something you like. They have a selection of gourmet burgers, salads, grills plus a good range of desserts and drinks. My favourite thing about Slug and Lettuce is the sharing starters. You can get an absolutely massive one for £12 with ribs, garlic bread, tempura vegetables, chicken and much more. I split one with a friend once, and we shared a side salad too, and we still left quite a bit. It's easily enough for 4 as a starter, and even as a full meal for 2-3. The plate was nearly as big as the table, and the people next to us ordered the same thing we did!
One thing to note as well is that the side salad is a good size and very varied - I hate it when you order a side salad or veg and it's all limp, boring, and in tiny quantities.
I always eat far too much at Slug and Lettuce, because I'm so greedy, but it is good quality food and though the prices can be a little on the steep side for me (if it's more than about £6, I don't eat there much), it's definitely worth it. It's the kind of place which is ideal for a business meal but also to take the family to.
I recommend checking the menu online here: http://www.slugandlettuce.co.uk/menus/
And also there are often 2 for 1 and other vouchers floating around the Internet, so it's worth having a search around if you're planning to go.
I've visited Slug and Lettuce in Nottingham and Reading, always had a good time and good food, so I completely recommend it. Losing one star for the prices though!
Summary: Definitely recommended
