Slug and Lettuce
Advantages: Great for the whole family
Disadvantages: Not the best disabled access
This review is for my local Slug and Lettuce in Durham.
Located in the relatively new Walkergate complex at the bottom of Clapath, The Slug and Lettuce is one of a number of pubs within a very short distance of each other. The pub itself is massive, although it's a bit like the Tardis, from the outside it looks small, but it is on 2 levels, the lower level cannot be seen from the front. Disabled access is somewhat tricky if you don't know your way around, but is via the lower level.
With masses of seating plus a large outdoor section, this pub is a great place to spend some time. The outdoor section is covered by umbrellas and is where smokers are permitted to go, so even if it's raining it's easy to stay dry. During the summer months the outdoor seating tends to fill up pretty quickly.
They serve a wide range of different drinks from lagers to cocktails. While the cocktails are expensive at nearly £5 a pop, I usually get one each time I go in as I like trying new things and they have a large menu!
Alongside being a pub, they also serve food. While it's nothing special, it's better than Wetherspoons (The Bishops Mill) which is located in the same complex, but while not as good as a 'proper' restaurant it's perfectly nice and pretty good value.
On an evening it's a good place to go, the music is turned up high and it can get very busy. Lots of people tend to start a night there rather then end it as the high staircase and plenty of drinks don't go together very well!
You can join the mailing list to be kept updated on various offers or promotions. Some of these can be very good, we went there for Mothers Day and they were offering a 3 course meal for just £10 per person and although the service was pretty slow, the meal was really nice and very good value as the portion sizes were generous. We had 2 children as part of our party and this was no problem.
Definitely well worth a visit if you're passing!
Summary: Well worth a visit!
