Advantages: Quirky interior
Disadvantages: Bad attitude of hostile staff
This pub used to be excellent, with good beer, a good atmosphere and good, friendly, conversational people.
Sadly, it had deteriorated until late last year, with ale that couldn't be drunk, a poor atmosphere and just generally a dirty appearance (the toilets hadn't been cleaned for months).
Thankfully, someone new took over, made the place look nice and turned it around. The atmosphere improved, the pub looked clean, felt clean, smelled clean and had a bunch of friendly staff who served good drinks with a smile. Until, that is, they have had a few pints of their own beer. My last experience of the pub was of an unfriendly, hostile, xenophobic, racist and aggressive pub. A real shame, and something that will now stop me from visiting the Tanners again. I cringe every time I walk past and I would advise anyone who is not from Alnwick, or of any origin not North-East England, to give this place a very wide berth. It looks now like it has turned into a private darts club for the owner's friends and unless you like sitting having a conversation in the middle of darts match, I would advise you visit an alternative establishment.
Summary: Would be a great place if it weren't for the xenophobic, hostile and aggressive nature of the place.
