Round, I may be. But that's enough of that!
The Baltic Fleet Public House is located opposite the northern corner of the Wapping Warehouse, which is basically opposite the Albert Dock in Liverpool. It is a Grade II listed building and is one of the few remaining public houses on the dock road, where in times gone by, Mariners could take their pick of watering holes. I read somewhere that this building is built in the Victorian palazzo style, although I have no idea what this means, or any care to mention it further.
But I do care to give you a description of a splendid pub, which is quite unique in the centre of Liverpool. Here?s what I?ve got to say?.
1) Ales, spirits & wines
Firstly, this pub is not part of any chain and therefore, it always has an excellent selection of local ales on tap. If memory serves me right, usually about 6 guest beers on at once and you won?t pay much more than 1.50 for a pint! Obviously it has the standard range of draught lager / cream-flow bitter / Guineas etc.. at ?normal prices but also available is an excellent (and very reasonably priced) wine list, which does change from time to time. Price depends on what you?re after ? I remember seeing a (decent) Campo Viejo Crianza for about 11quid. The have an excellent range of spirits, including various brandies from around the globe and also have a splendid selection of malts. Chatting to the (laid back and very friendly) Landlord, I discovered that they have even more wonderful spirits stored away, as there isn?t enough bar-space to display them all! So don?t worry about drinking them dry?? Oh, maybe that?s just me then ;o)
In a word, top notch. Oh, that?s two words, but it matters not. They offer a range of snacks ranging from bacon and Brie toasties, through various soups, to goodness knows what else. Expect to pay a couple of quid for such a snack. However, this pub has also a restaurant area where you will be thoroughly impre
ssed by the standard of meals. We went mid December for our annual Yacht Club Christmas dinner and found the food to be as good as you?d expect from a decent hotel. Not only was it delicious and served with the utmost courtesy, the extra touches, like nibbles on the table as you arrive and sorbet between courses to refresh the palette, really made the difference. 3-course meals cost about 20quid and remember this was the Christmas menu. I can?t praise the food enough.
Ok, so that bit of schpeel at the start (which I more or less plagiarised from somewhere) tells you about the building. Inside, as you?d expect, there is a nautical theme. The décor is predominantly wooden with redbrick structures. It is split onto three floors ? the first floor for the staff quarters, the ground floor is the main bar and restaurant (split) and the basement, for the ?heads? (or toilets for you landlubbers!). The basement has recently been refurbished and I haven?t been back to re-examine. Will do soon though! All in all, a really relaxing atmosphere for a few jars.
4) Ahoy?s Summary
Basically, if you want an authentic pub with a good selection of ales, a mixed clientele (no ?bad scallies? or the like!) and a few tasty bites to eat, you won?t find anywhere better in Liverpool. It really is worth popping in. It does have it?s own parking, if you just fancy a meal and is only about a ten minute walk away from Liverpool city centre. So, what are you waiting for?..
