      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Our visit was simply awful. We went there a few years ago and had a good experience. Must have changed hands though as tonight was dreadful. Food was average to poor, steak came swimming in a sauce with just 3 roast potatoes, no other veggies ! Waitress was moany and overworked, by 10.30 the place was empty which said it all. If i had to sum up the evening in one word, the word would be 'why?'. I will not be going back.

      A great place!!!

I would consider The Cock Horse to be my local pub, ok it's a 5 minute drive from where I live but it is the pub I visit most often and the one which my frends and I can often be found at.

The Cock Horse is a lovely pub/restaurant located in the village of Detling. Having read up about the pub, I discovered that there has been a building on the spot since about the 14th Century. The name comes from the fact that the building used to be a stable that housed a fresh horse (known as a Cock or trace horse) to help carriages on their way up the steep hill. The stable building can be seen at the rear of the pub.

My friends and I first started to go the The Cock Horse when they became a non-smoking pub back in 2004. As none of us smoked we liked the idea of being able to go to a pub and enjoy a nice evening out without ending up reeking of smoke.

It was during one of our evenings out that we first discovered the thing which keeps us going back at least once a week...the weekly quiz!

Held on a Thursday evening at about 8.30pm and with supper included (a variety of different offerings from sandwiches to curry) in the entry fee and a cash prize pot for the winners if they get a high enough score. We attend the quiz every week and thoroughly enjoy it

The mix of people in the pub is quite varied from youngsters right through to much older retired types. the atmosphere is friendly and the whole place feels very welcoming. The welcoming atmosphere is helped greatly by the landlord and lady who are very friendly and jovial. Colin, the landlord, is often the quizmaster and ensures the quiz is lively, amusing and fun.

Having been to the Cock Horse for the quiz and for nice evenings out for a few years but never having eaten there, my girlfriend and I decided a few weeks ago to give the restaurant a try. We booked a table mid-week and were given a lovely table in the restaurant area which is in the stable part of the building and as such has lovely wooden beams. Our table was next to the fireplace and was really nicely lit and very cosy.

We struggled to choose what we wanted because everything sounded so nice but in the end we decided and ordered. Our starters, we both chose baked goats cheese, came very quickly and were very well presented and, most important of all, was truely delicious. Our mains (posh fish and chips & a sausage & Bean cassolette) were again really nicely presented and scrumptious. It was a truely lovely meal and great value too. We were very impressed indeed, and realised exactly why the restaurant is often packed even mid-week.

Overall I would have to say that this is a lovely pub and a great restaurant which I would heartily recommend to anyone. A nice atmosphere, lovely landlord and lady and a really nice setting. My friends and I are often to be found there and will continue to be as it is such a nice place.
