Advantages: Pool tables, yellow card scheme for students.
Disadvantages: Potential death by giant Jenga blocks.
What is now The George used to be a lovely, slightly seedy but genuine local town centre-ish pub called Clancy's frequented by students and locals alike. The Guinness (which isn't even sold there any more) was among the cheapest and best available anywhere in Cardiff and the atmosphere was great.
So the It's a Scream chain has done its usual souless makeover, comprising mainly of South Park characters on the walls, inflated prices and giant Connect Four to amuse the 'ironic' student sense of humour, but what, exactly makes this pub any different from the Woodville, or any of the myriad other clones springing up in every student city in the country? Nothing. That's the main selling point of the It's a Scream chain you see - constant, unvarying consistency. It is to the pub what Beefeater is to restaurants.
Whilst a few innocuous cartoon characters do not a bad pub make, and I admit that I may be slightly biased as a former parton of Clancy's (which, incidentally was a makeover of the Royal George) I find this manner of chain-pub far too cloying and condesending to be an enjoyable drinking-den, although it may appeal to groups of already drunk freshers on their way to town.
Perhaps the inspiration for the actual painting 'The Scream' was the amount of formulaic pub makovers going on in Edvard Munch's hometown. The chain's logo depicts exactly how I feel when I learn of a favourite pub being turned 'zany'.
