The Kings Arms (Cardington)
Advantages: Pretty village
Disadvantages: Poor service and overpriced poor food
My family and visited in mid August for a joint birthday and anniversary celebration, party of 8. We had three generations in our party including my pregnant daughter and my parents in their 80's. We booked a table for 7.30 and we waited.......and waited......... When our menus finally arrived we were told of the dishes that were not available! Having taken the starter orders, we waited again.........The starters included prawn cocktails which were good but we had waited so long we were ravenous. Two in the party did not order starters so it was a very long wait for them to eat anything - over 2 hours!!!!!!
When the starters dishes were collected we were asked if they would like the chefs to start cooking our main courses!!!!!!This was somewhat surprising having waited so long in the first place We were finally served at 9.50pm after making several enquiries!!!!!! We had actually considered leaving and going for fish and chips we were so hungry but waited it out to be courteous. The blue steaks were overcooked and tough, the portions of all meals were small for the price, especially the lamb, with one very small bowl of thin slithers of vegetables between two, the duck was an odd colour, the quality of all food, even sausage and mash was generally mediocre and the service was awful. They were clearly understaffed and to be fair the manager did accept that and made an adjustment to the bill but our family evening was spoilt.
A week or so ago a friend and I had a lunch date and she suggested The Kings Arms!!! I told her of the evening meal we had had and she (living locally) confirmed that she would never have an evening meal there, having had a similar experience, but that the lunches were much better, and included a very nice baked potato option. Thinking it was deserved a second chance we went and how can a baked potato be spoilt?.
The baked potato option no longer exists!!!!!. The menu choice was not very imaginative but we opted for the chicken BLT wrap I think it was called. Not sure what the letters stood for but there was no lettuce or tomato visible or tasted in the tasteless dry wrap. The description was with hand cut chips I think, and we were asked if we wanted chips with it. Thinking this referred to the aforementioned chips we said yes and when the order came, discovered that there was a pile of sort of crisps( hand cut chips I think and to be fair I can't remember the exact description but we interpreted it as chips) together with a small bowl of actual chips. Additional starch and additional cost!!!!! A bit sneaky!!!!
Needless to say, neither of us will go again for lunch or an evening meal.
Such a shame because it is a pretty place in a lovely village and I am sure would be visited more by the locals and others if the food and service were much improved. Word of mouth is very powerful and in these days, a meal needs to be good value and tasty!!!!!!!
Summary: After two visits, lunch time and evening, would not return or recommend
