The Old Crown at Ashton is a traditional country pub. As you approach, a welcome sign marks the turning into a good sized parking area at the front entrance to the pub. Inside, the central bar is surrounded by comfortable seating and dining areas, with doors leading out to a very large garden with open air seating at the back. This is a warm and welcoming pub run by a young couple, Bex and Ian Street. The bar and restaurant are Bex's domain, while Ian, an accomplished chef, creates the freshly prepared dishes listed in the menu. I ordered the sole, which was absolutely delicious. The fish was covered in a light and crispy batter, and the chips were cooked to perfection. The peas puree was fresh and tasty. For dessert I had the banoffee pie which was one of the tastiest I've ever had, and beautifully presented. A table just inside the front entrance covered with newspapers for customers' enjoyment was a nice touch. Combined with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and food that not only tasted beautiful but looked beautiful too, lunch at the Old Crown was a real treat. Stoke Bruerne is just up the road from here, on the Grand Union Canal. There is a Canal Museum, and you can take a ride on a canal boat or just walk along the towpath.
