      Great fun!

So I went for a night out in Sheffield last week for the first time, and someone recommended that we go to The Plug. We then heard it was £1 per drink and decided we should definitely go!

We somehow got in for free (I think the entry was about £3/£4 otherwise) and we arrived at about 11:30pm. When we got arrived there were about 10 people there and I think we were all thinking we would have a few £1 drinks and then make a move. However a few drinks into the night and the place was starting to fill up, by the time we left about 2:00am it was really busy.

The actual club had several different rooms, we were in a pretty big room which had a bar along one side and a big dancefloor, as well as other space around it for just standing and chatting. The music was a great mix of everything really, but it was mainly chart music. We walked through some of the other rooms and they were a lot quieter but all seemed quite similar really.

The people in the club were mainly students, I was probably one of the oldest in there at 23! This normally bothers me when everyone seems really young but on this occasion it didn't as such cheap drinks, good music, and a fun atmosphere made it such a good night!

As I said drinks were £1 and this included things like vodka and mixer which is all I drink anyway so not too sure about the other drinks.

The Plug is quite central so it was easy to get to, and overall I had a great night there and would love to go again!

A good night out on a budget

On a rare night off, after deciding to go out on Thursday night for a late birthday celebration, we decided upon the Plug in the centre of Sheffield due to its infamous Jump Around nights every Thursday.

The Plug is located centrally in the city on Matilda Street, which is on the main bus routes and is easy to find. It is extremely popular amongst students, thanks to its low prices and being a good night out. It is a fairly large club that can be split into 3 rooms, called Earth, Live and Neutral, hence its name.

Live is the main room, which can accommodate about 500 people, there is a ground level and then steps up to a platform level. Overall, the venue can hold up to 1200 people. On a Thursday night, the main room usually plays current songs, anthems and popular music. Along the left wall is a bar, I have to say the staff where very efficient but I did have to queue for about 20 minutes until I was finally served and then I had to shout to be heard over the music.

The other two rooms are smaller and used to play alternative styles of music, there is a smaller bar in the other rooms. When I went on Thursday night, they were having an Easter special handing out mini eggs, bunny ears, a chocolate fountain and a booth to have glow in the dark rave paint painted on you. After you could have you photo taken in a booth and I think the photos are loaded onto Facebook afterwards.

There are different themed nights held throughout the week, I know next Thursday night is Sumo and Shorts, where if you wear shorts, you get reduced price entry at £2.50. Usually they will have a band playing on a Friday or Saturday night and this finishes around 10pm. Afterwards it is transformed into a nightclub and you can gain entry from 10.30pm. Entry prices vary depending upon the event, on Thursday, it was £6 without a student card, £4.50 with a student card but if you send a text to the Plug VIP service on the day, you got £3.00 entry before 10 past eleven, which I thought was quite reasonable.

On the door, they ask for identification to prove your age but once inside, at the bar, you aren't asked again. There is a cloakroom facility, which costs £1.50 per item and in return, you are given a raffle ticket with the number of your item on that you mustn't loose.

Drink prices are very cheap. A bottle of lager and coke with vodka is only £1, VS is £1.50 per bottle at Cheeky Vimto is £2. However I find that I don't drink very much as to be honest I can't be bothered queuing up and getting pushed and shoved. It isn't really a classy establishment, you do end up with drinks spilt all over you, it is hot inside and full of young men who are keen on groping you. I would watch yourself and stick with a group of friends but otherwise it is a good night out and I feel quite safe in there.

Chucking out time on a Thursday is 3am, if you are like me, I was desperate for my bed by that point, there is a taxi rank right outside but there is a bit of a scramble for a taxi, so it is usually easier to walk up to the main road and flag a taxi. Plug is in walking distance of the bus interchange and the railway station, if you are coming into to Sheffield for a night out.

Overall, I think this is a good night out and I can go out and still have change from a tenner at Plug. It is popular and you can see why, get there early to avoid queues.

          A club/nightclub in Sheffield

The Plug is located above a block of offices right in the heart of the city centre and since opening its doors a few years ago it has established itself as one of the most popular venues in the city. It is a large club split into three different rooms; cleverly called Live, Earth and Neutral.

Live is the room where most of the live bands play and there is a stage and a room large enough to accommodate around 500 people standing. The other two rooms are usually used to play different styles of music but the design of the place means that it is possible to remove the false walls and create one large room with a capacity of around 1200. I seen a few live acts here including Jarvis Cocker and Glasvegas and on both of these occasions it was just one large room rather than the three smaller ones.

There are different theme nights held during the week including indie nights but at the weekend the music is predominantly house and dance. The bands that play on a Friday or Saturday night are finished by around 10pm and by 11pm the venue has been turned into a nightclub with a licence to serve alcohol under 6am.

The location of the Plug makes it very easy to find. There is a taxi rank right outside and it is within walking distance of both the main bus interchange station and the railway station. A multi storey car par park joins onto the Plug but this closes at 10pm so if you are coming to watch a band check what time it finishes and make sure that you keep a check on the time if you park there.

Overall I think this is a great venue for the city and its popularity is reflected by the length of the queue outside the doors most nights of the week.
