This pub has developed a reputation as one of the best places to go for a meal in the East Neuk of Fife, and with good reason. It has the advantage of a beautiful location, nestling at the bottom of a slope overlooking the still waters of Elie harbour, this hostelry is well signposted from the main road through this small fishing town, and there is ample parking along the road that leads down to the harbour itself. Booking in advance is to be recommended, for even at lunchtime on a weekday, The Ship Inn is packed with guests. However, arriving unannounced in the summer is no disaster, as although you will have to wait for a table, you can sit out in the beer garden overlooking the water and enjoy a drink whilst choosing your food. Once inside, the pub has something of a Tardis effect, as it seems to conceal far more diners than you would have thought possible. The wait for your food is worth it, in my experience, as they have a fine selection of North Sea produce to choose from on the doorstep and the chefs make best use of this advantage, serving up large portions of tasty food, with seafood predominating as you would expect. All in all, this is a very friendly place to go and eat and I have yet to be disappointed with the food served in The Ship Inn.
