THE TOLLGATE INN, BURY ST EDMUNDS
For my birthday recently we went out for dinner. The restaurant of choice was The Tollgate Inn at Bury St Edmunds, which is about 20 minuets from where we live. The Tollgate Inn is a large pub, with a restaurant, it is a lovely building but unfortunately it's situated near a roundabout which I think quite spoils the first impression you get, there is disabled parking near the door (a must for my mum), and it does have a garden but I didn't really see much of it because it was pouring with rain. Children are made welcome and there is a child's menu available. Once inside its a delightful place with wooden floorboards and plenty of atmosphere. There is a restaurant area, but just as you come in there is a bar and seating area if you just wish to nip in for a drink.
The toilets are up a couple of steps which may prove a problem for some, but the actual bathroom was clean, smelt nice and was very spacious.
We were quickly shown to our table and an order for drinks was taken and delivered promptly. The restaurant has a lovely interior, once again lovely wooden floors with an assortment of olde worlde farming tools on the walls. The tables were large and spacious, not too big that you felt miles away from everyone, but when the meals arrived you were not struggling to fit everything one like in some restaurants.
The menu offered a good choice of food with a wide range of vegetarian options (both my mum and myself are veggies) this is often a problem as a lot of places only offer a couple of choices, which if you do not like proves to be a bit of a problem.
The waitress took our order and it didn't take too long for the food to arrive. The portions were very generous, my roasted vegetable lasagne would easily have served two people. It was served with a choice of chips or salad. I opted for chips(well it was my birthday treat!) and my mum chose the salad. My dad and fiancée both had steak. You could tell that all the meals were freshly cooked while you waited.
The lasagne was excellent, obviously made with fresh pasta, the sauce was lovely and rich and there was plenty of cheese. The roasted vegetables were nice and chunky and included peppers, tomato, mushroom, courgette and aubergine.
My mum said the salad was nice, just a regular salad nothing over the top, but everything was fresh and crisp. My fiancé and dad both said their steaks were delicious and cooked perfectly, just as they had asked for.
After the main course we were left just the right amount of time before desert arrived. I always think this is difficult to get right, on one hand the diner does not want to be rushed but on the other if you are left too long it seems to drag the meal out too much. But the Tollgate Inn timed it perfectly.
Desert was just as delicious as the main course and presented very nicely. We all had Toffee Apple Tart which was served with ice cream. It was absolutely delicious and the pastry was just "melt in the mouth". After the meal you were given chocolate mints with the bill, always a nice touch.
The whole meal with drinks cost £73.00 for four people, very reasonable for what we were given, the portions were huge!!!!! The service was excellent, the atmosphere was warm, friendly and relaxed. The waitresses were pleasant and efficient without being over familiar.
All in all it was a very good meal, service was first class and the price was not extortionate.
I would definatly recommend The Tollgate Inn for a nice night out.
Large portions of food
None really except may be the two steps up to the toilets.
