The Turnpike and the Mainevent are essentially two different pubs, offering different things, which just happen to be joined together. I will review them seperatly here, but keep in mind that you can travel between the two without going outside into the rain (a worthy feature in Hull). The Turnpike is quite spacious, with a big oval bar in the centre of the room. It has a variety of seating with normal tables, enclosed cubicals and a raised area (only slightly though) with further seating. It also has a large variety of quiz machines and fruit machines, which although hardly a startling innovation for a pub does provide some ammusment. My main criticism of the place is that it is never busy, or at least not when I have been there. This makes it seem to lack atmosphere. I assume it makes a profit as its always been there, so perhaps pub goers avoid it when they think I may be visiting. The Mainevent, behind or through the Turnpike, is the place to go for sporting events. It is full of big screens, small screens, medium screens, banks of screens etc. These often show a mix of events, but there are enough screens that you can watch whatever you want wherever you are in the place. It also has a couple of pool tables, which at the risk of sounding sexist, have been very useful to keep the girls occupied while we watch the footy. Its not too expensive either as they tend to have offers on bottles and things (look for adverts or the scrolling neon sign outside) and girls aren't very good at pool so a couple of games lasts them ninty minutes. I went to the Mainevent quite a bit last season and had one of the most bizarre experiences of my life there. Last day of the season and every pub is showing the Bradford match, but I am a Saints fan and it was the match shown on the other Sky Sports channel. We went to the Mainevent as the pub had the capacity to show both. I watched the Saints match in a room full of fans from across the co
untry, each cheering their own team on (when Sky flashed up score updates), listening to Bradford commentary and with people all wanting Bradford to stay up so cheering them and Saints on too. Barely a minute went past without some group cheering something, and if it was a scorline they would cheer again when the other Sky channel flashed up the score a minute later. The whole place errupted when Saints scored as it helped Bradford. Anyway the point of this paragraph was that the place not only showed sport but has a big crowd and great atmosphere, so is a good venue to watch it in too. If only good boxing matches fell within pub opening hours I would have loved to watch some here. Sport lovers I reccomend the Mainevent(I'm giving this half 4 stars and the Turnpike 3), peace and quiet lovers the Turnpike.
