The William Cobbett (Fareham)
Advantages: Nice door staff
Disadvantages: High prices, dark, dingy, messy, bored staff, crap bands, sloping garden
I actually went to the William Cobbett for the first time ever this evening for a friends birthday, and I can say for sure I will not be going back again any time soon, if at all.
The pub is located at the back end of Farnham, Surrey which is a quiet little town neighbored by Aldershot, Fleet and Crondall. The pub is just past the Police Station and is generally easy to find if you know your way around Farnham at all. There is a small car park just to the left of the pub, but I had a nightmare getting a space, and then getting out of the car park took even longer, it was a nightmare then too!
From the outside, the pub looks like a nice, quiet old time pub, but alas I was sadly mistaken. As soon as you walk inside you are met by very uneven floors, random steps everywhere through out the pub, and a dark dinginess that gives the place a seedy, dirty look to it. There are many old style posters of pub memorabilia, old bands and old beer matts and pump signs all over the walls and ceilings, but they have truly gone too far with it all, and the place just looks a mess. I have seen tidier looking walls painted by nursery school kids.
The tables and chairs inside seem rather randomly scattered, and the bar staff seemed so young, I wanted to ID them! It's obvious from the start that this is more of a students pub, but the students in there didn't fit in with the place, if that makes sense. There is a small bar in the pub, and a cocktail bar too. There is a general amount of choice when it comes to cocktails, but be prepared to pay for these! The drinks choice on the usual bar is the same as most pubs, with a large choice of soft and alcoholic drinks, but my god are they expensive. I hardly got change from £5 for two cokes!!
The bar staff have no people skills, and if you see one crack a smile, please take a picture so you have proof of it, I didn't see a single smile from one of them all night. The staff can also be seen mindlessly walking around collecting glasses, almost in a zombie like state!
There is a garden at the back of the pub, but it slopes toward the pub quite badly and some of the tables can tip up when you sit on them thanks mostly to the wonderful sloping. They had a band playing in the garden when I went, and to be honest, they were awful! There is a jukebox you can choose music from inside the pub, which costs about 50p a song I believe and has the generic pub tunes on there.
The upstairs of the pub is just the same as downstairs, only it has pool tables, which are in a bit of a state themselves. The toilets are generally hard to find, but when you do find them, there is only one toilet in the ladies, with a low ceiling in one place just as you walk in, so you may well bang your head. The mens may as well have no door, as you can see straight in when the door opens, what a nice view!
The door staff are nice and friendly, which is maybe just about the only plus side to this pub. I personally won't be rushing back to make a visit, and I do not recommend that any one else does either, it really is not worth the effort of leaving the house!
Summary: Not really worth it
