What on earth has happened to the Tarka Inn near Barnstaple? This used to be a nice friendly place that I visited often, however when I visited one lunch time last summer and tried to order cheesey chips and garlic bread for two I was told they were side orders and could not be purchased unless it was part of a main meal. I had not on previous lunch time visits encountered a problem with this choice and asked why this should be so now? I was told 'because thats the way it is'. needless to say I took my custom to another nearby establishment that was only to happy to serve me the above. I hadn't visited the Tarka again until Wednesday night when I called in for a drink, by about half past nine the staff were making it quite obvious they were in a rush to close and several customers got up and left after feeling uncomfortable, we were rushed to drink up by the bar staff who informed us they wanted to close by ten thirty. No I wont be visiting the Tarka again and it is no surprise that its not nowhere near as busy as it used to be. Such a shame that a lovely pub with excellent estuary views is being spoilt by the attitude of the staff, particullary in the present climate when so many pubs are having to close.

Summary: Used to be an excellent pub, but the last two visits thoroughly bad experience.
