Watership Down InnNewest Review: ... a few minutes we were served drinks by the 'chef', while apparently his partner was on the phone in the kitchens. The greeting was friendly and welcoming after the false start and we were shown to our table with candles burning - nice touch - and which we'd reserved as it always used to be so popular, but tonight the place was nearly empty. We were left with menu's and after waiting ages ... more |

So disappointed! Unfortunately I don't get to out anywhere near as often as I'd like to, and so try to go somewhere special when we do. The Watership Down has always been one of my favourites - great beers, good service, excellent home cooked food and reasonable value. So wow what a shock when I visited tonight! - and so much so that I felt compelled to write a review - something I would never normally do. On arrival the bar was deserted (on both sides), after a few minutes we were served drinks by the 'chef', while apparently his partner was on the phone in the kitchens. The greeting was friendly and welcoming after the false start and we were shown to our table ... Read the complete review

I met my family there from yeovil and me , my husband and 11 month son came from milton keynes.
We booked a table for sunday lunch to be told they had no roast on that day!
The customer servive was terrible, we were forgotton about so many times!
We orderd the chicken to be told they didnt have any, they forgot our drinks twice and the staff seemed like they didnt go to bed the night berfore hand.
The pub itself is absolutly gorgeous and set in such beautiful surroundings.
If you were to go there it would be for a pint of real ale and packet of crisps only, such a shame as this place could be a thriving village pub.

Very disappointing. We booked for a party of 10 for Mothers Day.We paid £10 for the roast which was only one choice (lamb) and thought the childrens portions had arrived first but were shocked to discover they were ours! Plus we have never had a roast served in a soup bowl! The roast consisted of raw carrots, peas, tough lamb and burnt potatoes. Another customer complained to be told by the chef (the landlady) that they were hardly connoseurs. So much for the customer is always right!
Childrens playground a health and safety disaster with a mini trampoline on top of the slide and a stool on top as well. All in all avoid this place at all cost. 1 star for the ale.

I have been visiting this pub for nigh on 30 years due to the quality of
food and the great variety of real ales on tap . Last year I felt that
standards were slipping somewhat and the food menu had become
over-complicated and too international. This year the new Landlord
has created a cleaner and brighter ambience with a lick of paint ,
de-cluttering and a cheery welcome. The menu is centered around
locally sourced produce and I find myself making diversions to eat
there at least once a week ! The Landlord's real ale recommendations
have never disappointed and if you're uncertain you always get a
taster . Vive le lapin !!

We used to really enjoy the Watership down. Not any more. Due to very poor management (or complete lack of it), which is illustrated by a very high turn-over of staff, visitors to the pub are likely to wait 2 hours for poorly cooked food. On complaining, they may be confronted by a very aggressive Chef who has obviously had little training in customer service, who will likely argue that, "if you're not happy you could have always have left", and "I can't care less what you think and I can say what I like"....
Several other customers made similar complaints during our visit.
It's a real shame because it used to be a fantastic family pub where we spent many enjoyable afternoons with our children.
