Having visited a number of Wetherspoons pubs over the years, and always been very happy with food etc., was very disappointed visiting the one in Stourport. Food arrived, and thought it was a joke! must have been about 10 chips on my plate! I made a comment to the server asking if there was a shortage of potatoes here! He said kitchen manager has to portion them. Told him that I have never had such a stingy meal at any other Wetherspoons but made no difference. Also no onion rings with the chickenburger that was ordered. I made another comment and was offered free drinks! was also told that chips are weighed per plate! Not the place to go to if you are hungry! very poor portions compared to other Wetherspoons.
Me and my mate had a weekend in Stourport On Severn just before Xmas and when we went into the town centre we decided to have a quick meal at Wetherspoons before heading off to another pub to watch the Villa smash Man U.
The reason for us eating at Wetherspoons was basically that neither of us had got a lot of cash to spend that weekend and they are the cheapest option for a hot meal in Stourport.
Wetherspoons is also known as Ye Olde Rose And Crown and its right next to the fair and the river. It's big inside and there's a large patio area where you can sit and watch the fair, since the smoking ban the patio is used as smokers corner and that's fine for me because smokers have got to sit somewhere but a lot of people who have used this pub for a long time do nothing but complain about people smoking on the patio! Some people aren't happy unless they've got SOMETHING to moan about! lol
I was actually surprised at how empty the pub was for a Saturday afternoon so close to Xmas, including me and my mate there was only about 15 other people in there and most of them were old blokes who you could tell was regulars. It was mega quiet in there with no music playing and the sports and news channels on the tv muted. All the staff I spoke to was quite friendly but they didn't go out of their way to help with anything, one of the girls who worked there was proper rude when she came out to check something with our order and that bugged me because I hate rude service anywhere.
I had fish and chips and my mate originally ordered steak and kidney pudding. She ended up with fish and chips too though because after keeping us waiting for 20 mins they then decided that there were no puddings left. The chips was typical pub chips and very nice but the fish was nearly all batter and inside it the fish was shrivelled and didn't have a lot of flavour.
You have to help yourself to sauces and my mate went and got us sachets of tartare and red sauce, she likes brown sauce on her chips and couldn't find any. When she asked at the bar I actually saw the woman (the same rude one as before!!!) shrug her shoulders and walk away without giving her any brown sauce! I thought that was a disgrace and if it was me and not my quieter mate I'd have pulled her back and marched her to the cupboard where the brown sauce was kept! lol It wasn't my mate's lucky day.... no steak and kidney pudding AND no brown sauce!
The food was proper naff, the peas tasted tinned and even though the fish was eatable it had a weird stale taste. The batter was swimming in fat and I ended up leaving most of that so that when we left it looked like my plate was still full.
I won't bother with this place again for something to eat because this is the 3rd time I've been disappointed with the food in this Wetherspoons branch. If I'm on the fair and fancy a quick drink then I might pop in but I reckon the pub across the road has got a nicer atmosphere and you can walk 2 mins up the road to Subway and grab a sandwich that you KNOW is going to be tastier than greasy stale fish!
Not particularly recommended but not the arse end of pubs in Stourport either!
When we spent a day in Stourport-On-Severn recently we decided to take the children on the fun fair, after spending a couple of hours racing from ride to ride we were all in need of a cold drink and a snack. My sister had spotted a Wetherspoons earlier so we hot footed it up the steep flight of steps to the outdoor seating and then I went inside to order our drinks and a plate of chips for the kids.
Service in this branch is both quicker and friendlier than other Wetherspoons I've visited across the UK. Staff were all nicely turned out and happy to help with any queries relating both to what the pub sells (food and drinks) and also knowledgeable about the local area, luckily actually as my sister was hunting for a bank which turned out to be located in an out-of-the-way side street - exactly where the barman said it would be!
There is an excellent selection of drinks at the bar including beer, real ales and a nicely presented wine list. Prices were extremely reasonable too, but then Wetherspoons are known for their low prices and drinks promotions so this was to be expected. The food menu is extensive and my mouth was watering as I watched other visitors tuck into delicious looking meals, we'd already eaten but I found myself wishing I had waited and had my dinner in here!
When they arrived the childrens' chips were wonderful, which reinforced my opinion of the days earlier disappointing dinner. They were so good in fact that my sister and I decided to order ourselves a plate while we were waiting for them to finish the large portion they had been served. They were delicious and if Wetherspoons can get chips so right then surely the rest of their menu must be excellent.
The atmosphere inside Wetherspoons was quite rowdy and crowded, nothing bad hearted just very loud. We were sitting outside to watch the funfair closing up so didn't really catch a lot of the noise as it was mainly families seated on the raised patio area, but the couple of times I went inside or to the bar I felt very closed in as it was absolutely packed with people sitting and standing everywhere.
The toilets in here are worth a mention, the ladies were absolutely spotless with plenty of room both inside the cubicles and also around the sink area. Also I noticed that walking past the gents there wasn't a sudden rush of bad air, which to a woman always indicates that the toilets are kept clean as there is nothing like the foul smell of walking past a poorly maintained men's toilet!
