Wetherspoons Pub - Stourport on Severn
Member Name: rji0907
Advantages: A good atmosphere, cheap food and drink
Disadvantages: Food isn't to the highest standards
I currently live in Stourport on Severn and recently myself and the family thought we'd go out for an evening meal as a treat, rather than cook. As the pennies are a bit tight at the moment we were after somewhere quite cheap, but without the quality of food being compromised. I had heard some good reports about Ye Olde Crown Inn in Stourport, but had never actually been there to eat (though it used to be a regular drinking hole of mine many years ago!), so we thought we would try it out.
From the outside the place does look quite small, though it is actually rather spacious inside. There is a large seating area at the front with a more designated dining area to the rear of the building where the toilets are situated. The bar itself is a large area and we found they had plenty of staff on hand to serve so you weren't kept waiting.
Stourport on Severn is located in the heart of Worcestershire around 4 miles from Kidderminster. From the motorway it is around a 20 minute drive and is best accessed from Junction 5 of the M5. Ye Olde Crown Inn is located right in the heart of Stourport on Severns town centre and is right next to the fair and river so is a convenient place to eat and drink if you are a visitor to Stourport.
The large room has quite a light, bright, minimalist effect to it. The walls are plain cream with a few framed paintings to add a splash of colour to them and the carpets were dark and patterned, which sounds quite gross but it worked well and I suppose light carpets would not work well in a well trodden atmosphere such as this and these carpets show marks/stains less.
Wetherspoons pubs aren't exactly known for being high quality establishments, so I wasn't expecting miracles when we dined there. However I was pleasantly surprised at how clean the place was. There were no dirty tables in site and as soon as a table was vacated then the staff were straight over to clean it all up. The cutlery, glasses and plates etc were all in pretty good nick too.
The menu at Wetherspoons is quite basic, but at the same time quite extensive so there is always something to suit everybody. They do a selection of 'value' main meals which can be purchased for either £2.99 or £3.99, depending on what you have. There are meals such as ham, egg and chips, cottage pie, jacket potatoes, sausage and chips and pasta on this part of the menu. They do a higher and more extensive range of main meals that generally cost between £4.99 and £8.50 depending on what you buy. They do a good range of fish, steak and burger meals with a decent selection of vegetarian meals too.
They don't do much in the way of starters, there are only about three on the menu with basics such as chicken wings, though they do a couple of 'combi share' dishes for those who wish to share. If you are after a light snack they also do a good range of paninis and sandwiches that are all served with a salad on the side.
They do a childrens menu for £3.69 per meal and features standard childrens favourites such as sausage, chicken nuggets and burgers and they also have a dessert menu, though again this is quite limited.
We were pleased to find that we only had to wait around 15 minutes for our meals to arrive and they were as ordered. The food itself was piping hot and cooked through thoroughly. The food wasn't exactly amazing, but it was perfectly edible and fine for the money we had paid for it. You can't expect a fantastic home cooked meal when you have only paid £2.99 for it can you!! It did taste a little 'warmed through' but it was great for a cheap eating place and I would go there again.
For me you can't really go wrong with Wetherspoons pubs. If you are after a high quality establishment then obviously you give these pubs a miss as this isn't what they are all about. The food and drinks are as cheap as you can get and the turnover is quite quick. We were after a cheap, satisfactory meal and that is what we got. Nothing more, nothing less. Staff were pleasant and friendly and got our orders correct, which is always a bonus! The place is child friendly and children are permitted by law to eat here until 21:00pm. Disabled access is also good with a concrete ramp at the front of the building, wide double doors to enter the premises and a spacious flat room. There are no steps throughout the building.
For a quick fix meal and drink on the cheap then I would definitely visit Ye Old Crown Inn in Stourport on Severn again and would recommend others to do so to.
Summary: A good place to visit for a cheap meal
