“ The Battesford Court, 100–102 Newland Street, Witham, Essex,CM8 1AH.Tel: 01376 504080 „
The Battesford Court is set in Witham in Essex. It turned into a Wetherspoons on the 24th June 2002, before that it was a Hotel. It is a very old building dating back to the 16th century, when it was the courthouse of the Manor of Battesford.
On entering this pub you will find yourself in a lovely open large area with timber beams everywhere. If you go in the winter you will be met with a lovely roaring log fire! They have two large fireplaces with tealights lit all along the mantle piece!
On going up a couple of steps you will approach a long bar to your left on the right is a large room with pictures of old Witham Town many years ago.
This used to be called the family room for you to take your children in for a meal, but as the Battesford was the first pub in Witham to go smoke-free
it then allowed children to sit anywhere in the pub, ( this can be annoying
sometimes if you get a screaming baby next to you!!)
If you walk right through the pub to the end you will come to the garden, this is very safe for children as it is very secure with high fencing. It tends to
just attract the smokers though! It has a few trees and plants with pots scattered about.
On going back into the pub you will see a large selection of tables and chairs with the odd sofa here and there. Some of the tables are in a line so
if a large group of you were to go you could all sit together quite easily.
If needing a visit to the toilet you will have to go through a double door that
leads to a very large wooden staircase. I can't speak for the gents, but the
ladies is lovely and spacious with large mirrors and chairs. It has always been spotless on the number of times that I have visited.
Back downstairs and you are ready to order your food, be it breakfast (before 12 o'clock ) Lunch or one of the many Club deals. Monday club means
you can get some beers and wine at a reduced price. Tuesday Club means
that between 3-10pm you can order a variety of different steaks with a drink for a reduced price ( I can't remember any of the Club prices I'm afraid!
but it's around the fiver mark I think) Then theres Thursday Club again between 3-10pm you can order a large variety of curries, rice and a drink.
My favourite is the Sunday club, that serves up a lovely roast dinner with a
drink for £6.49 (that one I do know!) You can have roast beef, half a chicken or a vegeterian option.
This is one of the nicer Wetherspoons that I have visited and try to get there
when I can. Witham is also a nice little town with the most amazing hanging
baskets throughout the town. This town also has a good selection of shops with quite a few charity shops as well. So it's a great place to go and have some lunch out without costing the earth.
