Advantages: Decent Prices
Disadvantages: Nout Special
Another week of boring college food leads to yet another trip out in to Durham to find somewhere nice to eat. This weeks choice was Yates, a pub/bar close to the centre of town. I'd never actually heard of this place until one of my friends went there, so decided to pay a visit myself. The first thing that strikes you when you walk in is the size of the place, it's certainly the largest pub I've seen in Durham, with plenty of tables to sit at, and a nice long bar to get your drinks from. It's also rather cheap too, although it doesn't seem to be all that popular with students. We went for some food, so that's where I'll start. The menu contains a selection of bar meals and snacks, rather than anything more up market. There's a selection of sandwiches or salads, as well as things like burgers and fish. As well as chips you can also have curly fries or potato wedges. The choice of deserts is rather limited though, with only 3 or 4 on the menu, this is made up for by the fact that the American style muffin with golden syrup and ice cream was one of the most delicious things I've eaten in ages. The beef, mozzarella and onion sandwich with chips I had was also very nice, although my girlfriend wasn't so impressed with her fish and chips. Price is one point where Yates does well, with most meals costing between £3 and £6. At the moment they are running a promotion where certain meals, including fish and chips can be had for only £2.75! At that price you can't really complain! Drinks are also reasonably priced, with a pint of Carling only costing £1.60 in Happy Hour (which actually lasts most of the day!). Other offers include Smirnoff Ice for just under £2 and a double shot for £2.25. Overall I found Yates a great place to go, the food isn't going to win any awards but it's much better than at College. I was surprised to see that there weren't a lot more students in Yates, it do
es seem to be more popular with the locals in Durham, which means that it probably isn't a good place to go drinking at weekends, although I do wonder how much of the reported student and locals hostilities are made up. Anyway, all in all I though Yates was a great place to eat, and one certainly worth going back to.

- 15/03/02 New menu has steaks on, which is bit more upmarket. Its new chicken ceaser salad looks very good. Being veggie its the aubergine medly or mediteranean pocket for me. |
