Ye Old Shepherds Rest Wilpshire Rd Rishton. Although this pub is a little bit off the beaten track it is a great place to go as a family. A Scottish and Newcastle Brewery run pub it has all the regular features including the Captain Coconut menu, Ball Pool, Outside Play Area, Regular Live Entertainment, Beer Garden, Pool Table, Over 14’s area, Family Area. If you are anything like me your major problem is where you can go for a beer or a night out and take the kids with you. Children are allowed in until 9.30pm or if they have live entertainment on they can stay for that until the end. With the separate family area you know that your kids aren’t annoying the people who are out for a drink not as a family. After all, I know when I go out without the kids it is with the intention of getting absolutely bladdered; I definitely don’t want other people’s kids doing my head in all night. The Captain Coconut Menu for the kids is pretty reasonable at £2.75 each for a main meal and a free ice cream. They say this meal is suitable for children aged 2-7 yrs. I would agree with this age range because the portions are not exactly massive. They seem to forget about the kids’ aged 7- 13. The Captain Coconut portions are too small; the adult menu portions are too large. Included with the Captain Coconut meals is a free fun pack, which is supposed to keep them occupied while they are waiting for their meal. My lot were far more interested in the outside play area. They just cleared off to play and we had to go find them when their meal arrived. This is great as far as I am concerned. The kids were out having fun and we had the chance to have a beer and a chat in peace. The Adult menu is not too bad price wise and the portions vary depending what you order. I ordered a Beef and Ale pie with chips and veg for £5.55. There would have been enough on my plate to feed me
and two of the kids. My Partner had a steak for £9.25 but he felt that he could have eaten more. Our 13yr old refused point blank to have a Captain Coconut meal (Can’t blame him really) so he had a Chicken Tikka Masala at £5.95 and polished it off with ease. All the food we ordered was really nice and the service was great. You can arrange to have children’s parties here at £4.75 per head. For that each child gets a meal, the child whose birthday it is gets a present, party bags, party invitations, hats, balloons and sticky badges are also included. The only complaint I would possibly have was the piped music. There is no jukebox, so you have to put up with whatever music is being piped through the system. When we were there they were playing a Carpenters tape. I can cope with the Carpenters for a while; it gets a bit monotonous when it’s on all night though. The kids had a brilliant time and my partner and I had a little time to ourselves. The food was good and the drinks were not too dear. All in all I would definitely recommend Ye Old Shepherds rest as a good place to go and eat as a family.
