Generally speaking I am a fan of Weatherspoon pubs, but I think the Zac Pearson is one of the worst I have ever been in. Built from scratch, Weatherspoons could have stamped any kind of style on this project, they seem to have gone for a conservatory type look. Now in some places this may be good, but in Hull, and Beverley Road in particular, the last thing you want is large windows. The view is uninpsiring, a garage, a bus stop and a carpark and the weather just makes you feel cold. The last place on earth you would build a conservatory is Hull, where typical weather is cold, wet or snow. That said the pub is normally full, partly because of the poor seating arrangements and largely because of its cheap drinks and two for a fiver meal offers. Even as a poor student I could only tolerate being in the place for short periods at a time (for the cheap booze), as it lacks atmosphere, the toilets are a good five minutes walk from the nearest point in the pub (upstairs, along, around ...) and it just seems badly designed. As pub prices come down to compete I feel more people will agree with me that it is not much of a pub, even if you seek to avoid football or music. As my tutor would say to me, must try harder or on the evidence of your other work this shows a distinct lack of effort. This is one Weatherspoons I will not revisit.
