Advantages: sturdy set of jigsaws that will last a long time
Disadvantages: the box might not last
My son has been into jigsaws from when he was tiny, its something he has always enjoyed doing. Last Christmas he had got really into Fireman Sam, and had asked Santa for some Fireman Sam toys, so when I saw this set of 2 jigsaws, I knew he's love them.
What to do you get?
Inside the box, there are two jigsaws, a 12 piece puzzle and a 24 piece puzzle. The jigsaws are about A5 in size, and are aimed at the age range 3+.
Jigsaw Pieces
The jigsaws pieces are made of sturdy carboard, with a wipe clean feel to them, any sticky handprints can be wiped off with a baby wipe. Making them hard to damage or rip. The pieces for both jigsaws are a good size, the 12 pieces not being too big and the 24 pieces not too small, making them great for little hands (and big hands to if you want to help). The pieces fit well together, making it easier for your child to put pieces together, and they don't get stuck, making the jigsaw easy to break down again too. The puzzle pieces are pretty different in size and shape, so when the jigsaws are broken up, its easy to seperate them. However I tend to put each puzzle inside a sandwich bag inside the box to save having to do this everytime.
Jigsaw Pictures
The pictures on the jigsaws are of the new style animation of Fireman Sam. I am not sure about the picture on the 12 piece jigsaw as I think its a strange choice of picture. The picture is a close up of the fire engine (you can't even see the whole thing) Sam holding the door open (however he is facing sideways) and the fire station dog (you can't even see the dogs face). This just seems to me a bit odd, a very strange picture choice for a puzzle if you ask me. However this doesn't seem to have made a difference to my son who built this puzzle up in next to no time.
The 24 piece jigsaw has a picture of just about all the characters standing outside the shop. All looking out, as if they were getting a photo taken, a much better choice of picture. This picture has a lot more detaiL.
Box
The box opens up a bit like a lunch box. It has a handle at the top which fits through a slot at the top of the box, which once pulled through stops the box from opening. I really like the idea of the handle, it makes the jigsaw portable, great for a toy to take on holiday, or overnight at the grandparents. The handle is quite small so great for little hands allowing my son to carry it around himself. Not that that every lasts very long. The box has two large pictures on the front, allowing my son to refer back to if he gets stuck. The rest of the box is mainly red and has sereval fireman sam logos all over it, making it stand out straight away to any little fireman sam lovers. The box also has a few nice added features on it like a firemans badge and more, this gives the box a little bit of character. However it might look really good, but it isn't made from the strongest cardboard, and after only 6 months its already starting to buckle at the bottom, and if I didn't keep the puzzles in bags, I would be worry some pieces may fall out.
Playing/Learning
I think the age suggested on the box is right. My son is 3 and can do both puzzles easily now, however the 24 piece jigsaw was a bit of a challenge to start with, which allowed me to help, however he has cracked it now. The 12 piece puzzle was no problem from the get go and I think children, including my son could have managed this one a little bit earlier. However that being said as a box of 2 I think 3+ is correct. My son does have quite a few jigsaws in his cupboard but this is one he keeps coming back to. We have since gone on to buy him some of the larger fireman sam jigsaws, that he has managed really well. I think starting with this set really helped him with moving on to bigger and harder jigsaws.
Overall a great sturdy set of jigsaws that will last a long time, even if the box doesn't. Lets kids enjoy doing jigsaws with one of their favourite cartoon characters.
I picked this up at my local B&M bargains for £3.99, however I have seen it online since then, both new and used for cheaper.
Summary: 2 jigsaws of fireman sam for 3+
