The Melissa & Doug Farmyard Jumbo Knob jigsaw is a lovely wooden toy that was given to my son for his first birthday. I checked on the Amazon website and it is currently retailing at £9.92 (May 2012). The range also includes, Pets, which includes a bird, cat and dog, and Rainforest, which includes a monkey, parrot and tiger.
The puzzle includes a cow, sheep and horse. Each piece is brightly coloured and handcrafted, with a large chunky knob on each piece for easy pick-up. The knob is well positioned so that the animal is not obscured and is easy for my little boy to grasp with his tiny hands. Underneath each piece is a picture of the animal to allow your child to match the piece correctly.
The pieces are very well made and fit well. The animals are set on a red background which looks like they are sitting in a barn and this is also well made and chunky. The pieces are sturdy and chunky and stand up to a bit of bashing and general play, none of the paint has flaked off and the pieces have not become chipped, splintered or dented.
The puzzle is very easy to do for children of a young age, the puzzle is marketed as being suitable from aged 1, and I would agree with this. My son was able to do the puzzle within a few days with a bit of practice. The good thing about the puzzle is that it is chunky and great to look at, is easy to master and also helps children to learn different animals and where they live.
The only downsides to the puzzle is that is it very easy to do, so has a limited life span , though as it is so well made it could be passed on to other children and it is also quite pricey, but again if it is passed down through subsequent children it would be better value for money. Overall I would recommend this puzzle to others.
