My daughter hadn't really been playing with her jigsaw puzzles up until recently. I'm glad she started playing with them again before her third birthday as I had a few put away ready for her birthday and Christmas and didn't want them to get opened then not played with!
--- Price and packaging ---
One of the puzzles I got during the year was this Peppa Pig giant jigsaw and colour. I bought it when it was on sale in my closest Tesco Extra it was half price at only £5. There was also a Fireman Sam version on sale at the same time too.
The puzzle comes in a flexible plastic carry bag and features a blue carry handle on the top. The majority of the bag is transparent with blue piping and detailing. The bag has a messenger type bag feel to it with the opening hidden under the flap over part of the bag. There are two plastic poppers keeping the flap in place when the puzzle isn't in use, it's very handy for keeping all of the parts together. Inside the bag is a cardboard sleeve showing us the final jigsaw design and it contains all of the product information, it has a cut out part so you can see the pieces of the puzzle inside.
--- Giant jigsaw & colour ---
The jigsaw features 24 different pieces in total, each individual piece is around 10cm squared in size. The large nature of the pieces mean that the knobbly bits that stick out have a nice big size too so they are easier for smaller hands to handle and to get into place without accidently ripping it off. The pieces are made from a strong, hardwearing cardboard, they are near impossible for little fingers to bend.
The design on the main side of the jigsaw is lovely, it features Peppa Pig and her family and friends at the fun fair. The design is places nicely on the jigsaw so almost every piece has a picture that another piece has to match up to. I think this is brilliant as my daughter knows she has to look for Peppa's hand, or a piece of cloud, for example, to match up to get the pieces in the right place so she doesn't need to force any pieces into place. Once completed, the puzzle is quite large at approximately 90 centimetres x 60 centimetres, it's definitely the biggest my daughter has.
The jigsaw isn't the only brilliant feature of this product. On the other side of the puzzle is a black and white 'colour in' picture. There are five wipe off crayons included in red, yellow, blue, green and pink. The design is totally different to the main jigsaw, this one shows Peppa and her brother George sitting in the kitchen doing crafts at the table. The black outlines on all aspects of the picture are nice and thick so not only is it easy to colour in, it's easy to place the pieces together too. The wipe off crayons are brilliant. Once colouring has finished and my daughter has had enough, I can get a dry cloth and it removes every last trace of the crayon so that it is fresh and clean ready for the next time my daughter wants to colour it in.
I gave this to my daughter for her third birthday and it's one of her favourite jigsaws she has (and that's quite a few!). It's also one of my favourites as she has to tidy away her toys before she can start doing the puzzle as it's quite large once finished. My daughter doesn't need any help at all doing the main jigsaw. I think the larger than average puzzle pieces makes it easier to complete the puzzle independently. The lack of colour on the colour in side makes it quite difficult for my daughter as the only way you can complete it is by matching up the black lines, but with me helping her, she is getting the hang of looking for the kitchen clock, chairs, so that she can put pieces into place herself.
The age recommendation for this puzzle and colour is three years. I gave this to my daughter when she turned three and doesn't really have a problem with the main puzzle. I think perhaps, younger children, with a good attention span, could benefit from this puzzle too, the chunky nature of the pieces mean that they don't pose a risk and they are easy to handle.
--- Overall ---
Even if I hadn't purchased the Peppa Pig giant jigsaw and colour at £5 half price I would think this product posed excellent value for money. The main jigsaw is fantastic and the colour in aspect adds a whole new dimension to puzzles. The build quality of both, the carry bag and the puzzle itself is brilliant and despite playing with the puzzle a few times a week for the last two months, it is still in a fantastic condition.
