My entry for the synchronised swimming event.

Christmas is a wonderful time where I get to spoil my kids rotten, and I spend a lot of time trying to think of fun gifts that appeal to their interests. Currently, aged 4 and 5, their interests are quite broad still so they pretty much like what I get for them. Cars is not their favourite Disney cartoon, but they are familiar with the characters from watching the first Cars film.

Certain they would appreciate a jigsaw we could all do together, I picked up this 60 piece large floor puzzle for about £10. Currently it is even more bargainous on amazon at only £5. Constructed by Ravensburger, I knew the quality of the jigsaw would be high. Colour is a big part of the fun here, as it features a lot of the different Cars characters in bright reds and blues and greens.

Creakily, I got down to the floor the first time we got this out, as we needed a large area of approximately 70cm by 50cm to play with this. Construction caused a little bit of conflict and confusion the first few times we played as the kids adjusted to using more pieces and working over a bigger space than they were used to. Crucially, the bright colours of the cars and the contrast with the background helped them adapt. Completion was an achievement to them, and they have had a sense of satisfaction every time we have played with the jigsaw since.

Chunky pieces that are well made and can cope with being handled are one of the key characteristics of Ravensburger puzzles. Cardboard of a couple of mm in thickness is a more than adequate material for its construction, and there has been no bending of pieces or parts of the picture lifting off in the time we have owned this. Children aged 4 plus are the recommended target age for this product, and I can confirm that my 4 and 5 year old have had a lot of fun and gained vital cognitive skills through playing with this one. Cars is not likely to go out of fashion either, so this will likely be in good enough condition to either save or pass on when we have finished with the set.
