      ping pong to go

For sport on the go it doesn't get much better than this Table Tennis set which can be played pretty well on any table you want, and which is one of the best things we've bought this year. As a family we may well be way off Olympics level but at £9.99 currently at Decathlon (rrp £19.99) it's an inexpensive buy. Decathlon seems to be the only place that stock this brand as far as I can tell - you can purchase online or in store as we did, as a bit of an impulse buy. It has got us started playing table tennis and is getting lots of use. It's available in lots of different colour combinations - we chose green, with replacement bats being a reasonable £1.99, should we ever need them. The product itself comes with a 2 year guarantee.

In the set, which is very compact and comes in two little 22cm by 16cm sturdy carry cases which are 10cm deep when velcroed together (not pictured here but can be seen on the decathlon site, link at the end of this review), you get all you need for play - a net, two midi sized rackets and 3 brightly coloured balls. The design of the net is the cleverest thing, it rolls out, to a length of up to 2metres and the two poles have spring loaded clips on the bottom which means that it automatically adjusts to any thickness of table, up to about 5cm thick. Installing the net is a breeze and, once in place, it stays firmly put during play. We've used it indoors on a circular round glass table as well as on varied outdoor picnic tables from that in our own garden to various ones out and about. Once you have finished play it takes less than a minute to pack everything away tidily.

Clearly, when using this set you are not necessarily going to be conforming to official table tennis rules, though circular table tennis is certainly an interesting variation on the traditional game in my experience. By my measurements the net height itself does, however, seem the same as the official 15.25cm one prescribed by the international table tennis federation. It's not a set to be used for more than fun but, in my opinion, for the price you pay it is pretty well made and enjoyable for all participants to use. The bats themselves have rubber faces in two different colours and, again, are not a standard competition size. They work well though and you can get quite some speed up with them; they give a fairly authentic experience of playing and are certainly a step above a toy. They have rubbered sides which do mean that the table you play with is slightly protected in case of impact. The handles are a little small at only 7cm long, but with this set it's all about transportability and fun - you literally can play wherever and however you want. The set is so small it's easily slipped into a picnic bag or case; the solid plastic lids and zippers keep everything well protected.

I think that for the price that I paid this set is excellent, it's a great introduction to the sport and could be worth buying before in investing in a proper table, which is going to be a lot more expensive. A combination of clever design, good build quality and the fact that it's just plain fun to play with make this table tennis set a great buy in my opinion - I highly recommend it.
