Head 6 Pack of Tennis Balls
Advantages: good quality balls, suitable for all surfaces
Disadvantages: none really
Both my children are keen tennis players and belong to a local club. My oldest son trains several times a week and participates in lots of competitions including a county league. When the team are playing a home match the deal is that you provide the balls. It is essential that new balls are used with an unopened tube being given to each pair of players. Our club always uses head tennis balls as these are considered to be top quality and are also approved by the international tennis federation. The balls are purchased by the club coach at a discount from a local sports shop. However Head tennis balls are widely available and I see Argos are selling 2 tins, containing 6 balls, for just £4.99.
The balls are packaged in a sealed pressurised tin with each tin containing three tennis balls. The tin is easy to open via a ring pull. When not in use the balls can be stored in the tin with a lid to keep them in place. The balls look like other popular brands being covered in yellow felt but with the black *head* logo emblazoned on the ball. The balls have an excellent bounce;especially when they are new! They are suitable for all types of playing surface including clay and astro turf. They can also be used on indoor courts. If you play recreational tennis, then these balls will last you for ages without losing their bounce. However if you are a more serious tennis player then the balls will need to be changed on a regular basis as the more they are used the less predicable the bounce will be. When they are training my sons squad will be able to use the same balls for several sessions. However when playing competitively the balls will need to be changed after a few games. I am just glad it is not me for has to supply them!
I believe that if you are serious about any sport then it is important to use the right equipment as this can really improve your performance. My son has two head tennis racquets as this is his preferred brand and the one that suits his game the best. He also thinks that head make the best tennis balls, although as someone who is no longer a player I am not convinced! All branded tennis balls will lose their bounce eventually,no matter what the initial cost! However the head brand does seem to make balls that have a consistent bounce and I have never seen one split.
When the balls are no longer any use to play a decent game of tennis,my son brings the balls home for our setter. They are a lot cheaper than the balls on sale in our local pet shop and despite being well chewed, they still remain in tact! They also have enough bounce for the dog to enjoy a good game of catch!
If you are interested in finding out where you can play tennis locally, then I suggest you check out the LTA website where you will find a full list of tennis clubs and coaching programmes. Tennis really is a great sport !
