I used this ram when I was still running a core2duo chip, I now only use mac's so I don't really get to build computers anymore.
This 4gb kit (although small by todays standards) can still cut it, although as RAM is so cheap you'll want to run 2 sets to give you 8gb of RAM- which is plenty for 90% of users.
The RAM looks really cool, if you have a window in your computer case you will appreciate this, for users who just stick their computer case under a table this won't be so important. Computer components colours are driven by trends, when this ram was out yellow/black was a popular colour combination so it was easy to get a motherboard to match it (if you cared about the aesthetics of your computers inner), but now it might not be so easy to get matching components- but eitherway the ram looks great when used in a black motherboard.
The performance of this ram is great- it is rated at 800mhz but I overclocked it way past this and it helped me overclock a core 2 duo from 2.4ghz to about 4ghz- impressive!
I would highly recommend this ram if you're in the market for some DDR2, but remember this is not compatible with modern systems so if you have a fairly new computer chances are this won't fit. Because it's not so popular now it is harder to find, but it still sells often on the used market.
I have had this RAM in my computer for 2 years now. I got it because of the reputation of crucial and for its striking appearance.
PROFORMANCE: it has served me very well for a multitude of applications, i have used it with video editing, games and 3d modeling software. although DDR2 RAM is now on the way out i still find it's speeds to be adiquate for most tasks and haven't had much in the way of problems while using it. The cooling plates also work well i have yet to suffer any overheating with these units even when my PC is under full load. I don't overclock my components so i can not comment on any OC potential with this unit though.
EASE OF USE: RAM on the whole is probably one of the easiest components to install, but with the cooling plates on this model (the sexy yellow metal side panels) it's even easier as you don't have to worry as much on how you hold it on installation (its still worth grounding yourself first though to avoid any static build up and potential damege to the RAM).
One thing to mention on this, is the great customer service you get from crucial themselves. lats xmas one of the RAM sticks had a fault which lead to random BSOD, once i had diagnosed the problem i contacted the company. they got back to me with in 24hrs and told me to seld off the RAM to them. Within a week they had replaced it and my PC was back up and running perfectly. this was a great relief and the whole proccess was very quick and painless. I would recommend Crucial RAM to anyone.
The Ballistix line is specifically built for performance enthusiasts who want to push the performance envelope without worrying about data loss or corruption, mysterious intermittent errors and display problems, or worse - the dreaded BSOD! The Ballistix line of high-performance memory modules features advanced speed grades, low latencies, and integrated aluminum heat spreaders.
A Ballistix dual inline memory module (DIMM) consists of a number of memory components that are attached to a black printed circuit board. The gold pins on the bottom of the DIMM provide a connection between the module and a socket on a larger printed circuit board. The pins on the front and back of a DIMM are not connected to each other.
