Advantages: Good value, 2GB, Matched Memory.
Disadvantages: Not for overclockers.
The Kingston 2GB DDR2 RAM is a great way to purchase all the RAM you will currently need for games and Microsoft's latest operating system Windows Vista.
Installing extra memory into your PC is the best way of increasing performance for very little money, if you are currently running 1GB and are on Windows XP you may want to stick unless you play demanding games. If you have Windows Vista you and only have 1GB or less of memory you will definitely want to upgrade as Vista is a demanding operating system and easily consumes 1GB of RAM with just a few basic programs running. If you have an AMD Athlon X2 or Intel Core2 Duo processor you will want to take advantage of your powerful hardware by matching it up with atleast 2GB of RAM.
In the box you will get two 1GB sticks of matched DDR2 memory, matched means that they are capable of running in dual channel mode for extra performance provided you have a motherboard that supports this. The memory runs at 667MHZ which is good but you can get faster, however the performance advantage gained over DDR2 667 is minimal so unless you have a large budget this package makes the most sense. This set of memory runs at 1.8volts, this is important to know as some motherboards run at higher voltages and may fry your memory so make sure you do some research before purchasing. The only disadvantage to this RAM is there are no heatsinks so if you plan on overclocking, it may be worth spending more for higher speed RAM. Installing the RAM is easy enough; if you have never done it before do not be put off as even I can do it!
First you will need to locate the memory slots on your motherboard; these are the long slots with clips on either side. If your board is capable of running dual channel they may be coloured, the ones on my board are red and yellow, to run in dual channel mode you will need to plug your memory into slots of the same colour. To install the RAM simply insert it into the slot and press down firmly on each side until you hear a click, if you have to remove memory to install the new memory you will have to eject the old stick by pressing down the clips before inserting the new memory. Once this is done boot your PC and it should be detected, if your PC doesn't boot the first time check you have seated the ram properly.
With 2GB of RAM in my system I can currently do anything I want on my PC, playing games and day to day applications all benefit from having a large amount of memory to work with. I am running on Windows Vista and I have seen even my 2GB of RAM being fully utilised sometimes so I'll maybe upgrade to 4GB as the prices of memory are so cheap now. Bear in mind if you want to buy two boxes of this for a 4GB total you will need to use a 64bit operating system, such as Windows XP 64 on Windows Vista 64, if you use 32bit you won't be able to use all of the memory due to software limitations.
This memory is a bargain and can be bought for as little as £30, shop around on the internet at places like ebuyer.co.uk and overclockers.co.uk for the best deals. If you want to purchase from a retail store such as PC World you'll probably end up paying a premium. If you need extra RAM for the latest games and Operating systems, the Kingston 2GB DDR2 667 package is perfect for you. It is affordable and will provide enough memory for even power users. 5/5
Summary: An excellent way of getting all the memory you need.
