Sometimes after work, cooking something myself is too much of a chore and so I splash out on a ready meal. Chinese is and always has been a firm favourite and about a month ago I decided to try Asda's own chicken chow mein. When I purchased it, it was £2, although it is occasionally on offer for a bit less. The packaging was identical to above when I bought it, but since suggesting this on Dooyoo, the packaging was changed to a solid box as opposed to a sleeve, so you can no longer see how much chicken you are getting (I used to make sure I was getting a good few chunks) but the price is exactly the same. On the packaging this meal is described as "soft, thick egg noodles with chicken breast, beansprouts and choi sum, in a soy, ginger and garlic sauce". It says that it serves 1 and I would say it is a decent size serving for 1 person. You can either cook it in the oven or microwave it from chilled, although it is also freezable. It takes approximately 35 minutes in the oven at 190 degrees and it takes between 4 and 7 minutes in the microwave depending on how powerful your microwave is. When you cook it, it is advised that you stir everything a couple of times to cover all of the ingredients in the sauce. I have had this meal a few times since then and it is consistently delicious. Whether you cook it in the microwave or oven, you get the delicious Chinese food smell wafting through your house, it's delicious but indescribable in words, it's just that smell you get whenever you cook/have Chinese food. It looks as appetising as the photo on the box; bright greens, juicy chunks of chicken and yellow egg noodles and it smells delicious. The chicken is clearly reformed and although there is a warning of tiny bones that may not have been removed, I have never had any problems with this. The nutritional information per pack is as follows: Calories - 484, 24% of your RDA Sugars - 6.4g, 7% of your RDA Fat - 11.6g, 17% of your RDA Saturated fat - 2g, 10% of your RDA Salt - 3.2g, 53% of your RDA As you can tell it is quite high in salt! Although it does not taste especially salt, the soy sauce contains a lot of it and the high salt content is something to be aware of so that you ensure you don't over do it in the course of a day.Calorie wise it is classed as "medium" but if you are only having it as a one off treat now and again it doesn't matter too much. The egg noodles are of a good consistency and they taste nice and fresh, but they only have a very subtle flavour as they are supposed to. The sauce is tasty and not too runny; I could taste the soy and ginger but you get the garlic in the form of a lovely after taste! The chicken is nice and juicy but definitely reformed, but this is usually the case with ready meals. the veg is nice and crunchy and full of flavour so all in all it is a decent ready meal all round. It is low in saturated fat and relatively low in calories for a takeaway style meal. It is much cheaper than a takeaway option and really delicious.
