Asda Chips and Curry Sauce
Advantages: Quick to cook, pleasant tasting curry sauce
Disadvantages: Floppy and uncrisp chips
This is not the kind of thing I would usually eat myself, as obviously a tray of chips and curry sauce from the chip shop is far preferable to a frozen product which is simply going to be microwaved. However, I made the mistake of allowing my ten year old granddaughter to accompany me to Asda last week and she practically begged me to buy her one of their Chips and Curry Sauce to try. For just £1 I thought it was worth trying as it would make for a quick snack when she visited from school almost faint with hunger. I jest, she simply 'feels' as though she's going to faint due to not eating for the past two and a half hours!
These are a microwave meal and take roughly 7 minutes to cook, obviously this will depend on the power of your microwave so do check the chips are cooked properly before tucking in.
It's a very small meal, actually I would say it's snack sized as there are certainly not as many chips as the photograph on the box would have you believe. They appear to be very similar to those awful Micro Chips that were so popular a number of years ago, once I'd doused them in salt and vinegar however the smell of them did begin to resemble 'proper' chips somewhat.
I ended up eating the majority of this meal as my granddaughter didn't like it as much as she thought she would, in fact she had one mouthful of curry sauce and declared immediately that she wouldn't be eating any more. I'm not actually sure why she had this reaction as the curry sauce is rather nondescript and there isn't really enough depth of flavour to really take offence at.
The flavour of the curry sauce is of a watered down chip shop curry sauce, you can tell that is what it's supposed to resemble but it's more fruity and is far less spicy. I wouldn't say it's an appalling attempt at a curry sauce, in fact I've used jars of curry sauce that have been less flavoursome, but the overall experience of eating this box of chips and curry sauce is too little like eating it from the chip shop for it to taste authentic.
Was I really expecting authenticity though? Well, no. I had expected the meal to be rather larger based on both the size of the box and also the photograph, but with regards to the actual taste of this meal I'd say it's more pleasant than you're probably imagining it to be. The chips have the standard 'oven chip' flavour, as they've been microwaved they obviously haven't crisped up as a McCain chip would but they're not bad at all.
As I mentioned, a liberal sprinkling of salt and vinegar will bring the chips to life and also adds another dimension to the flavour of the curry sauce. I said at the beginning of my review that the chips appeared to be similar to Micro Chips, this doesn't carry over to the taste however and I'm happy to report that they're not the synthetic tasting chips I had been expecting.
This is a product that I wouldn't buy regularly, however I see no reason at all why I shouldn't keep a box in the freezer for when I fancy something quick and easy. Of course, if chips and curry sauce are what I want I will usually go to the chip shop but I do think this is a viable alternative for those times when I simply do not want to go out.
Summary: An interesting hot snack idea
