Advantages: Bit bland
Disadvantages: Cheap and easy to heat through
First off let me explain something! I am not writing about Asda 'Be good to yourself' chicken korma but simply Asda Chicken Korma. I did request a link for this product but got told I couldn't have a link and to write it here! Just to clarify that!
The other night I was wandering around Asda absolutely starving and staying with a Vegetarian I have been partaking in a mainly Vegetarian diet. I haven't missed meat at all but then I spotted this and really fancied a korma and couldn't see this type of offering in a vegetarian option which to be honest I would have opted for had I of seen it. However it had to be korma or nothing so I slung it in my trolley!
The food comes in a black plastic tray that has two sections (one housing the korma and the other housing the rice) and it has a plastic see-through lid/cover to the top of it. Over that there is a cardboard sleeve that slides on and off the tray with ease. On the front of the sleeve there is a photograph of the korma and I'm told that it is Asda Chicken Korma 'Mild and creamy, served with fragrant pilau rice' and that the product weighs 400g and that it is mild in flavour and contains no preservatives, there is an at a glance nutritional chat on there and the best before date is clearly stamped on. On the back of the sleeve other information listed includes ingredients and allergy advice being given, cooking instructions and a full nutritional chart is shown and storage advice (this is freezable by the way) and contact details for Asda are given. Nice enough bright pink packaging this is that is informative enough and not too much of it neither!
The Korma Itself:
Well you can cook this in the microwave for about 9 minutes from frozen or in the oven for around 30 minutes. Personally I banged mine in the microwave as I'm a lazy and greedy so and so!
It came out hot enough and cooked through and then came the all important taste test of course!
First off the portion size wasn't huge to say the least. It all looked nice enough though and I could really smell cumin and cloves that were in the riice. The rice was bright yellow as it is coloured with turmeric and it was grainy rather than soggy. It contained bite, was well seasoned however for me it was really overpowering with the spices and I was eating whole cloves that to me overtook the taste of the rice completely. However with the rice I have to admit it was good quality and looked good enough to eat!
The Korma was not bad. It really wasn't restaurant quality though lets face it. Yellowish in colour the sauce was a bit runny however there was a fair amount of chunks of chicken in it that did appear and taste like breast. It was a plain korma though, just sauce and chicken and for me lacked cream and yogurt to add a rich thickness to the dish. It was again seasoned ok however like the rice with the spices for me the desiccated coconut was a bit chewy and overpowering making the sauce have rather a gritty feel.
Ok for a quick meal but don't expect deliciousness on a plate that costs only £1.50. The portion isn't large at all but it fills a gap sure enough. It tastes ok and it's of decent quality to be fair to it but it failed to delight me and I although I would eat it again at a push it fails to excite me in any way shape or form!
