Tasty, quick lasagne I'm rather impressed with!

Not very often do I purchase lasagne as a ready meal. My Mum who is actually a legendary bad cook makes this up beautifully and whenever I have bought one I have felt let down as the pasta is usually completely bland and/or soggy or like eating cardboard so like I say I tend to avoid them however the other day I really fancied one but one I could bung in the microwave and not make up from scratch!

      The Packaging:

The meal comes in a black plastic square shaped tray with a see-through plastic lid over the top of it which is very easy to peel off indeed. Over that there is a purplish coloured sleeve and on the front of that there is a photograph of a cooked lasagne on there and we are told that it is Asda 'Chosen By You', Meal For 1, Italian Beef Lasagne 'Rich minced beef bolognese with tomatoes and mushrooms layered between fresh egg pasta. Topped with creamy bechamel sauce with cheddar' and we are told that the lasagne is freezable and there is an at a glance nutritional chart shown. Other information on the sleeve includes ingredients, allergy advice, nutritional information is given as well as the weight stated (400g), cooking instructions are given and contact details for Asda are listed.

      The Lasagne itself:

Well you can oven cook this from chilled or from frozen or in the microwave from chilled. Cos I'm lazy and want food fast I microwaved mine and that took 7 1/2 minutes.

The portion size of this is large enough and quite thick and settish when I pulled it out of the microwave. It was easy to remove from the carton and looked nice enough with the top being a yellowy colour and then three layers of the mince, onions, tomatoes and herbs layered between two thickish and moist pieces of egg pasta.

Nicely seasoned, I think this would have gone a nice golden colour if I baked so next time I have it I will cook it that way and in the oven. However this was a nice quality and tasty lasagne. The mince was good quality and not fatty or gristly at all, the onions were shredded into small bits and the tomato sauce was just that without big bits of tomatoes in it or anything like that. There were also slithers of well cooked muchroom in it and I could really taste the oregano and small hint of garlic within this. The pasta wasn't sloppy or hard then on the top of the lasagne there was white and cheese sauce that had a real taste of cheddar with a hint of a nutmeg flavouring to it and in abudance too and smooth in texture.

I liked the way this was a moist and tasty meal, the cheese was quite strong but the meal was well balanced in flavours and I also appreciated that this wasn't a sloppy, gooey meal and at a pound a time I can see why this is a 'Chosen by you meal'.
