Advantages: Nice breadcrumbs
Disadvantages: Fake tasting chicken; Mega salty
I brought these Chicken Kievs in Cool Trader the other day, they was 99p for 2 and I thought that was a bit of a bargain because the Bernard Matthews stuff is quite expensive at the minute. I LOVE garlic and chicken together and thought these would be the business but the kievs were a bit of a let down and I didn't enjoy them all that much.
They are chicken breasts with a buttery garlic sauce inside and then coated in breadcrumbs. You cook them in the oven for about 30 mins and while they're cooking you get a wickedly strong waft of garlic going all round the kitchen.
Bernard Matthews have used 100% breast meat to make the kievs but they're still not that good because the chicken has been processed and it tastes a bit fake and not very fresh. I think the chicken has got a very bland taste and is also mega salty, I know a lot of the salty flavour comes from the garlic butter but it's soaked into the chicken too much and made the whole thing much too salty.
The garlic is quite nice but I thought the inside of the kiev was a bit too oily feeling, I know it's made of butter instead of being a creamy garlic filling but when the butter melts while the kievs are cooking it just goes dead greasy and even though it tastes nice it's a bit of a weird feeling.
The breadcrumbs aren't too bad, they've actually got quite a nice taste and have got a bit of a burned flavour that tastes a lot better than it sounds! lol It's a shame the chicken and garlic is so crap because Bernard Matthews have got the breadcrumbs spot on! lol
I don't recommend these even for 99p and they're a lot more expensive than that in the supermarkets, I wouldn't want to pay more because Sainsburys do a wicked own brand kiev and those Mini Kievs you can buy in a bag are loads better than these big ones.
Not recommended!!!
Summary: Not As Much Of A Bargain As I Thought They Was!
