“ Brand: Country Store / Type: Other Ready Meals „
I have found that these frozen chips fry best for us with our deep fat fryer set at 170 - 180C (we use sunflower oil). They seem to make the perfect chip, ie. crisp on the outside and soft on the inside and they have a reasonably good potato flavour.
We have tried many brands and varieties of frozen chips and between the three of us, we have concluded that this product is as good as any we have sampled and perhaps fry even better than some "posher" ones.
The only reservation I have is with the description "steak cut". The contents do vary a fair bit in size and I'm doubtful that the largest chips, although adequate would meet everybody's ideas of this term.
Overall, I believe this product offers excellent value for money and I see absolutely no point in buying the more expensive and better known makes.
These Country Store Steak Cut Chips was only 99p for 2kg so I thought I'd try them because we're not all that loyal to brands of chips. I remembered when I got home that I have tried their chips before, another kind but they was so crap it should have put me off buying Country Store again!!!
They're not steak cut in my mind, they're just normal sized compared to Mccain Oven Chips and have got a horrible greasy feel even when they're still frozen.
You cook them in the oven for about 20 mins and have to turn them a couple of times, LOADS of oil comes out of them when they're cooking and they smell madly greasy. The colour of them hasn't changed much and they look a bit raw even though you couldn't leave them in the cooker for any longer or they would deffo end up going hard.
The chips are majorly bland, there is hardly any flavour to them and even after I'd put loads of salt and vinegar on them they was proper boring tasting. All oven chips are boring I reckon and that's why I don't eat them very often, but these are WORSE than boring and have actually got a weird aftertaste. They taste mega fake and nothing like either real chips or even potatoes! lol I had some on a butty and it wasn't like eating a chip sandwich, it was just a hot stodgy mess and even though I LOVE chip butties I didn't enjoy it at all.
I don't think it would even make much difference if you put some sauce on the chips because they're so majorly bland that all you'd taste would be whatever you'd put on them. These chips aren't exactly NASTY but they're proper bad quality and I won't bother with them again, you're better off to buy a decent brand of oven chips even if they cost more.
