Heinz Macaroni Cheese
Advantages: Tasty, quick
Disadvantages: Might want to add extras...
I found some of these in our tin cupboard and had them for lunch the other day. I since bought another few tins because it was so scrummy!
Macaroni Cheese isn't exactly difficult to make, but tis is one of those things that is useful to have in the cupboard, for when you can't be bothered with proper cooking!
I usually have this on a slice of toast, but I have been known to just have it on its own, warmed up, or even cold!
There are two sizes on the shelf, however I always go for the smaller one as I can't trust myself not to eat a whole can of the bigger one! The smaller can is 200g and the larger is 400g.
The packaging is a regular tin, with a yellow label. The Heinz label is on the front and has a picture of the macaroni.
The macaroni is regular macaroni pasta, which has been cooked already, and is in a cheesey sauce. This is why I feel I am OK to eat it cold, as it has all been cooked already. However, it is nicer when it is steaming hot. It is really easy to heat - either in the microwave or in a saucepan, and takes under 5 minutes to do.
I always think it looks fairly unappetising until it is heated, as the cheese sauce goes slightly jellylike! It is much better when it is heated as the sauce goes runnier, and smoother.
The pasta is nice and soft, just as I like it, and is covered nicely by the cheese sauce. The sauce isn't too strong, so ideal for those who aren't great cheese lovers, but is better when a bit more cheese is added - not the healthiest option though!
So, I sometimes add a little more cheese, and I quite like to have a little bit of sweet chilli sauce with it too. What I like about it is that you can add pretty much anything you want to it, to make it slightly more substantial.
The ingredients are: Macaroni (39%) (Water, Durum Wheat Semolina), Water, Skimmed Milk, Cheddar Cheese (3%), Cornflour, Reduced Fat Cheese (2%), Flavourings, Modified Cornflour, Vegetable Oil, Mustard, Salt, Stabiliser (Polyphosphates and Sodium Phosphates), Sugar, Colour (Beta- Carotene).
For the 200g serving, which is the size of the smaller tin, or half of the regular tin, there are 170kcal. I think this is quite as it makes a nice lunch.
The larger tin costs about 80p-90p which I think it quite good value and it is definitely worth buying Heinz rather than own brand.
I think it is a great product for having in the house for one of those lazy days, although it makes sense to just make your own and then you can flavour it to suit!
Summary: Great for lazy days!
