Iceland Beef Roast Dinner
Advantages: Filling, tasty, good value
Disadvantages: Carrots turn out hard
It would be interesting to know how many people buy this meal; i am pretty sure it's most likley to be people living on their own; people who perhaps can't really be bothered to cook for themselves or people who just want something quick. To be honest I think this meal is ok! I have quite often bought it in the past.
My partner isn't very well at the moment; now usually when I'm with him, either he or me will cook a good meal for ourselves. I was trying to encourage him to eat last night but as he didnt want to go to iceland, he just asked me to get him a pizza! I spent a long time in Iceland ( I am a frequent shopper there!). I got him his pizza (which turned out to be the wrong one; thick crust instead of thin crust!) and i decided to get myself this Iceland Roast beef dinner. It is also available as a chicken dinner but I prefer the beef. It takes about 40 minutes to cook in the oven (you have to put the yorkshire pudding in 5 minutes before the meal is cooked). You can also microwave the meal, but i prefer it cooked in the oven.
The minute i stepped back in the front door; he saw my meal and said "oh... i would have eaten that!" Then he looked at his pizza and said "its the wrong one" I offered to go back to Iceland but he said no. I felt a bit guilty that he had the wrong pizza and i had something that i liked!
Anyway, i know some of you out there may think "my god i would never buy a frozen roast dinner" or you may think it would taste horrible ; but it is actually pretty decent. At the moment they are only £1.50 in Iceland and to be honest you get a fair amount. Admittedly you don't get that much beef and its the very thin variety but its' just about enough. The gravy is delicious, the small roast potatoes are in plenty supply and taste fine and the Yorkshire pudding.. well its just like a frozen one. Not much to it but it's ok. No problems with the peas, they are quite nice and tasty. Unfortunately the main thing wrong with the meal is the carrotts. Whever i have bought this meal, the more larger the carrotts, the less well they turn out; often too crunchy, hard and taste underdone. There isn't really that much you can do about this.
The picture on the box makes the meal look quite appetizing. There are only 356 kcal in the meal itself, which i think is good considering its a decent size and a roast dinner.
To end my story about my partner and the pizza; he left it too long in the oven and it burnt! I felt terrible; my roast dinner was cooked to perfection (albeit the carrots weren't). I offered him some but he wouldn't have any of it. Poor thing. needless to say he only ate about a third of his pizza. I hope he gets well soon!
Overall i do receomend this meal; despite the hard carrotts; it's cheap, no dirty dishes to clear up (like when you cook your own roast) and whilst of course it won't be as good as one you can do yourself, its saves you plenty of time, its filling and tastes pretty good.
