Iceland Chicken Curry with Rice
Advantages: Tasty, Flavoursome, Filling, Easy To Prepare, Cheap At £1.00
Disadvantages: Not Enough Chicken, Al-Dente Rice (Not Soft Enough)
Iceland produces a large range of frozen ready meals and I have to say that this is one of my favourite. It's very cheap at just £1.00 and it is actually very flavoursome and easy to cook too. You can buy it from any Iceland store from a freezer and you must keep it frozen until you cook it, which is arguably easier for storage reasons.
The meal comes in a cardboard box, which has a blue background with the image of the curry dish on the front. In a bright yellow box is the value price at just £1.00. It's really cheap considering it makes a substantial main meal. The box is easily opened to reveal a plastic packet.
The packet is joined together and contains the curry with sauce on one side and the rice on another. Pulling them apart can easily split the parts. The rice has a white appearance and is just plain rice. The curry has a light brown/orange appearance and has a lot of flavour to it.
You simply microwave the curry before adding the rice and cooking it all for longer. You must pierce the plastic bags beforehand with a fork or knige to let excess steam escape or there may be an unfortunate explosion in your microwave! It's very easy to cook and you only need to attend the microwave to add the rice. It should be left to stand for a minute.
It's unfortunate that the packets are so hot to handle when it's finished but with care, you can handle them and load it onto a plate. I like to lay down the rice with a slight gap in the middle before piling on the curry sauce with chicken. The meal gets fully cooked and is boiling hot, which is helped by the packets to contain the heat. The rice was slightly al-dente, which is my only drawback but the chicken was actually quite tender and tasty.
The meal itself was very tasty. The sauce was slightly spicy but not overly spicy. It had little bits of fried onion in it along with many other spices and flavourings, which really gave it a lovely taste. It went well with the rice, but I would have liked the rice to be a bit softer. The sauce had quite a thin consistency but wasn't too messy as you could easily mop it up with all the rice. The quantity was actually surprisingly good too. You got a lot of rice as well as plenty of sauce. There wasn't a huge amount of chicken, which is another drawback but it was still quite a filling meal.
Ovearll, it makes an excellent emergency meal. It's very cheap at just £1.00 and is extremely easy to make, but you do need a microwave. It is very flavoursome and quite filling too. I dislike the fact the rice doesn't get very soft and that there isn't much chicken, but it's still a great meal when you consider the price, flavours and ease of making it, which gives it a solid 4 stars!
Thanks for reading,
Summary: Overall, a good meal, which is flavoursome and filling with a good quantity but lacks some quality
