Advantages: Very cheap and easy to cook

Disadvantages: Doesn't come in a plastic tray

I hate cooking a meal when I am home on my own, so the last time my girlfriend went away, I went into Iceland and picked up a frozen meal for one. I chose the chicken curry with rice, it only cost £1 so i thought it had to be worth a try.

The packaging was the usual icelands style, it had a large yellow along the top of the box with Big Value pack written across it, the meal actually weighs 400g, i think the big value reflects the £1 price tag more than anything. The first thing i noticed when opening the box, is that this meal doesn't come in a hard plastic tray, it is actually separated in to two plastic pouches - one for the curry & the other for the rice.

To cook the meal, take it straight from the freezer, pierce the bags, put them on a plate and cook it for eight minutes, shaking half way through. This is when you realise how handy the plastic tray's are, they did make a fair bit of mess on the plate as the sauce could run out of the piercings i had just made. As it was cooking you could smell it and for a £1 meal it did smell very nice. After cooking, you have to empty the sachets ( which are red hot, so be careful) and pour onto a plate.

Once the curry was on the plate, the first thing i noticed was the lack of chicken pieces, there was plenty of sauce and the rice had fluffed up nicely. The rice tasted very good, as good as any uncle bens packets where you would be spending £1 for the rice alone. The chicken was a little chewy, but bearing in mind this meal only cost £1, it tasted good. The sauce was fairly spicey and was nice and thick.

Overall, for £1 it's not a bad meal, i would happily pay an extra 20pence though, to have a proper plastic tray. When i have a microwave meal i always prefer to eat it straight from the tray supplied to save on washing up; that aside, for this money you can't go wrong.

Another thing worth mentioning, is that this curry contains 534 calories, which is pretty high. I guess if you went to any Indian take away and ordered the same meal the calorie content would be just the same, so for a microwave meal you cant complain

4/5, only losing a paint due to a lack of plastic tray!

Summary: Worth trying but I couldn't have it every day
