An okay part of a chinese meal.

~*~*~ Iceland Crispy Chilli Beef ~*~*~

      ~ What is it? ~

This is a tray of Crispy battered beef with a chilli sauce. It is part of Icelands Chinese range.

      ~ Price & Availability ~

This is available from Iceland stores and cost's £2 which is pretty good compared to buying it from the local Chinese takeaway.

      ~ Cooking ~

The instructions for cooking this say to oven cook at 180ºC or gas mark 6 for 12 minutes. My hubby took it upon himself to stick it in the fryer where I can say that it did indeed come out crispy.

The sachet of chilli sauce simply needs to be defrosted in a mug of hot water, you can then pour it over the crispy beef, we didn't do this as I don't like chilli so my hubby poured the chilli into a pot and used it as a dip.

      ~ Overall ~

I am a massive fan of crispy shredded beef from the local Chinese, it's something I will always buy when we have a takeaway so when I spotted it in the freezer in Iceland I popped a box in the trolley and looked forward to trying it that evening.

I am not sure why my hubby chose to deep fry it but I would recommend it as it really worked, the beef inside the batter stayed soft and tender but the batter on the outside crisped up really well.

It wasn't as nice as the one from the takeaway but for the price it was well worth it. It went well with our food and tasted good.

The only drawback being some of the pieces didn't have much beef to offer and others had nice soft chunks, they were nice anyway.

My hubby had the chilli sauce as a dip as I don't like it and he said that it was quite a spicy sauce and that I definitely would not have liked it!

I would buy it again in the future.

      Thanks for reading :o) x

A cheap meal that doesn't deliver!

I really wanted a chinese the other day, actually no I was craving the crispy shredded beef and I couldn't afford the £12 minimum delivery charge so I popped to Iceland to see what they had instead.

Iceland offer their very own range of indian and chinese frozen meals so I quickly checked out their chinese freezers. It was here my eyes beamed at the sight of Iceland Chinese Takeaway Crispy Chilli Beef. A rectangular shape, plastic black tray, sitting in a deep red cardboard sleeve with a celofane cover. The cardboard sleeve clearly telling us what the dish is as well as boasting the £2 price tag. The dish is quite simply Beef strips in batter with a chilli sauce. The dish contains No hydrogenated fats and No artificial colours, flavours or preservatives as well as No GM ingredients.

You cook the crispy beef in the oven for roughly 12 minutes while popping the sachet of chilli sauce in a bowl of boiling hot water for it to defrost.

The crispy strips of beef varied in sizes, some being short and chunky and others long and thin, the batter coating was quite thick and the dark, beef inside was minimal unfortunately. Keeping an eye on them and watching them turn a golden colour I popped them onto my plate and prepared my chilli sauce. The batter was crunchy and really greasy too and I could taste no beef it was dominantly teeth crumbling wayyyy to crunchy batter, now and then I'd be lucky enough to have a 2 second chew of something I'm hoping was beef. The chilli sauce had a sweetness about it at first but soon tantalised my tastebuds alright becoming slightly hot and tangy, very tasty though. I wasn't expecting them to be as good as the ones you buy from an actual chinese takeaway but I was expecting the batter to be coating some beef !!

      Each 100g of the 200g tray contains;
      336 cals
      21.2g fat
      2.1g saturates
      1.4g salt

I'd never buy these again, the batter was way too greasy and very hard and crunch too, rather than crispy. There was hardly any beef in them either which was a sore disapointment. The nicest thing about the meal was the chilli sauce!

If you love chinese food, this is a must!

I have done a very silly thing and thrown away the packaging for this product so am without nutritional info at the moment, but will definitely be buying some more at the weekend so will add to this review then. But to be honest, its too good to keep quiet about until the weekend so I want to share this review with you now so you too can buy some at the weekend!

I am a huge fan of chinese food, (getting more huge if I carry on eating it!!!), I particularly enjoy both eating out and a takeaway. Whilst shopping I noticed that ASDA were doing a chinese meal for 2 for only £3.00 so decided to give it a go. I then visited Iceland and as I love crispy beef when I saw this product for just £2.00 I had to get some. (£5.00 for a chinese meal with 3 dishes , 2 rice and 2 spring rolls is a bargain in anyones book!)

The pack (pictured above) contains 200g of crispy beef (about 20 pieces) and 1 sachet of chilli sauce. The chilli beef is frozen and needs to be oven cooked at 200 degrees for 14-16 mins. I set the oven timer for 8 mins, then turned the pieces over to ensure all round crispiness.

When cooked the beef turns a beautiful golden brown colour and 'sounds crispy' as it is moved to a plate. Some of the pieces had stuck together and cooked together so next time (and there will be a next time) I will ensure that I separate the pieces before cooking.

The dish itself is absolutely delicious. Despite the fact that there were about 20 pieces in the box, only about 16 made it to the plate! I tested one, and honestly could not believe how tasty it was, so had to try another! A couple unfortunately found there way to the dog (thats my story anyway!!).

The beef was tender and tasty, the batter crispy and just the right thickness. I was really surprised by the quality of the beef, it was easy to chew and added a much needed crispiness to our meal. We didn't use the sauce as we didn't think it needed any extra taste. There are a whole range of dishes in this range at Iceland and after this experience I shall definitely be trying some others.

        An absolute triumph!

27/10/2008 update :- what have I done! My local iceland have not had this product in stock for the past 4 weeks! Should have kept the secret all too myself. Will keep looking and update as soon as I get my hands on some!!!
