Innocent Sweet Potato Chilli Veg Pot
Advantages: delicious, 3 out of 5 veg a day,
Disadvantages: £3.75 could be considered expensive,
Loving innocent smoothies, I was delighted to discover new innocent veg pots are being introduced. I bought mine from a tesco express, as a quick dinner as I was planning to go out later that night. From the various different flavours, it was really hard to choose between all of them: 'mexican veg pot', 'portugese red pepper piri piri', 'thai coconut curry', 'thai vegetable sweet chilli' and 'indian vegetable masala' are just some examples!
After a lengthy decision, I chose the Thai vegetable sweet chilli pot! (Just to note, I've chosen to review this version because currently the thai vegetable on isn't available on dooyoo! must be new!).
The veg pot is probably more suited for lunch, although I found it was filling enough anyway for tea. When I bought it I didn't realise that it didn't have any meat in it, but there is so much other ingredients in there this didn't seem to matter.
Here is a full list: Red pepper (15%), water chestnut (14%), water, onion, babycorn (10%), cooked rice (9%) (water, rice, vegetable oil), carrot, soy sauce* (water, salt, molasses, sugar, soya bean, wheat), demerara sugar, ginger, red chilli (1%), cornflour, garlic, red wine vinegar, coriander, vegetable oil, lemongrass, red thai curry paste (vegetable oil, water, red chilli, salt, ginger, garlic, galangal, sugar, lemongrass, shallot, kaffir lime peel, coriander seed, coriander (0.8%), cumin, cardamon seeds, white pepper), lime juice, sea salt, lime leaves. (*Contains: gluten, soya).
This certain veg pot gives you 3 out of your 5 veg a day which I thought was exceptional! There's not many supermarket meals that could claim that. The various vegetables make it healthy, but also interesting. You might read this and think, 'urghh a veg fest! This must be really bland!' But it isn't at all! Lots of interesting spices and seasoning are added and there are strong but suited flavours. I do have to add though, this is hot! You need to like hot, spicy food for this to appeal to you, I was surprised at how spicy it was!
I was also worried whether or not it would be filling enough, as there is no meat, but the rice in the pot and chunky pieces of veg, made it just right. Obviously this is a good vegetarian and vegan choice, but I would definitely not hesitate to have it again being a meat lover. It is also extremely healthy, low in fat, high in fibre!
The favourite part of this meal was the fact that there was so much waterchestnuts! This is of course a personal preference but I absolutely love them. Every chinese take out I end up being disappointed cause I only find 2 pieces, but this is jam packed! Yum! Relating to the ingredients though, it as wasn't until after I read the packet I realised lemongrass was in it. In contrast, I hate lemongrass! Worst vegetable ever, if I realised I might not have even bought it. Saying this though, I didn't find the taste overpowering and I didn't notice it at the time, so it must be in small proportions.
Other places you can buy these vegpots are Sainsbury's, Tescos (where I bought mine from) and Waitrose. When I bought mine I got 2 for £6, so £3 each which isn't bad, but at an individual £3.79 guess it is quite expensive. It depends what budgets you spend usually when shopping. But I'd say it was worth the extra cash.
It is simple and easy to cook, which was an advantage for me as I was in a rush to get out! You simply open the lid and then loosely place it back on and microwave for 2 minutes, stir and microwave it for another minute. Done. So fast and easy!
Overall, I thought it was delicious, quick and easy to cook, will definitely be trying some more...
Hmmm, thai coconut curry next I think.
